Is he doing a cystoscopy with hydrodistention? This would mean he will fill your bladder with water to measure bladder capacity, and to look for any pinpoint bleeding or Hunner's ulcers. Small bladder capacity (though not every ICer has a tiny bladder) and pinpoint bleeding are hallmark symptoms of IC. Hunner's Ulcers are an IC thing, but only a small percentage of patients have them.

usually a hydrodistention (stretching with water) while you are anesthetized is the "surgery to diagnose" IC, and they will be looking for small hemorrhages on the bladder wall when it's stretched. Sometimes a potassium sensitivity test is done, too, thru a catheter and while you're awake. I would definitely ask questions as to how knowledgeable the Dr is re: IC and what tests you're having. Good luck, and welcome! There is TONS of great info and lots of great IC'ers here.

A cysto/hydro is done under general anest. Just a cysto can be done in office, which wont show IC, the hydro will tho. Check out the handbook at www.ic-network.com/handbook you will get a lotta info that way. Hope that helps ya

I am glad I had a hydro to diagnose me, because it showed just how small my bladder was and how much damage there was to it. Pelvic exams ALWAYS hurt me, I've only had 1 where it has been ok.
If you are going to do the hydro, you'll be totally knocked out, and when you wake up, you'll know whether or not you have IC. Hydros aren't so bad, and some people get relief from them.
