I wasn't sure if my SS disability was approved a few months ago. I had to wait 60 days. Well, right before the 60 days were up, I got a letter from SS, and I really have been approved !!! I actually got the first check. I had spent most all of my retirement and savings to live on for the last 2 years, so it was a relief to get some income, finally.
After 2 years of worrying, and the year before that--my last year of working--in total agony, this sure makes me feel a little more secure. I'm still fighting my LTD insurance policy. Thanks for everyone's help.

CONGRATS!
I have a bit of good news for you...... I get both soc sec and LTD policy. Although it's twice the work getting approved and then all the reviews...... Typically, once one of them approves you, the other follows along and approves too. Make sure you send copies of your approval letters (and checks if necessary) to the LTD to prove that they approved you. This may help the process.
Yay, yay, yay!!!!!!!!!! Congratulations!!!! :) :) :)

I get both LTD and SS too...actually, my long-term disability insurance co did all the SS application/appeals stuff for me (since it was in their best interest to have someone else paying). The funny thing was that they worked very hard to persuade Soc Sec that IC is a permanent condition and then once SS was approved, they made me prove to them the same thing!!! The reviews irritate me, though....every 6 months I have to go through the whole thing again and twice they have cancelled my benefits because they "didn't receive the paperwork in time." Both times, it took nearly 8 months of appeals to get my benefits reinstated. Personally, I truly believe that they have a policy of "losing" incoming review paperwork and then claiming it was never received. During one of the appeals, my case was given to an outside review company who were supposed to evaluate my claim and records and then recommend whether or not to reinstate my benefits.....when that company finally decided to recommend reinstatement, they faxed over their decision and then mailed the hard copy to my LTD company, but neither was ever "received". Since then, I have started sending my paperwork AND a copy via separate carriers with tracking numbers and required signatures.

Judy,
I am about to start receiving long term disability also. I was curious about having the long term disability company get involved with social security instead of getting a lawyer. I know it is in their best interest to have social security approved so they only have a minimal amount to pay you on their end. Do you mind me asking who your long term disability company is? Was your claim denied with SS on first try? If so, did you get an atty to help with the reconsideration? Sorry for all the questions, but I appreciate all who share their experiences as to the hows and whens as I do believe we can all help pave the path for others as we go.
Congratulations Nature....what a huge victory! I need to proceed ASAP myself with my initial denial...just need to figure out which route I should take first!!! You go girl!

Hi again,
My LTD company paid for a lawfirm to process the SS initial application and handle the appeal. Yes, it was denied at first, but then approved on appeal in September 2000. I didn't do anything except sign a doc giving the lawfirm power of attorney with regard to the SS application. The whole thing was done for me, for which I am so grateful, since I'd probably still be trying to figure out what to do next. :)

Thank you so much to all of you for your wonderful words of support !! This message board means so much to me--I don't have very many people to talk about this stuff with. I'm sure I will be asking questions in the future about my LTD insurance.
