boy, you guys might get sick of all my questions......

Does anyone experience all lowering of your blood platelets with Elmiron or Elavil? I read that this is a rare of definite possiblity. I cannot afford that as I also have ITP. A blood disorder that means you have very low platlet count.

I had my spleen removed in 93 to help it and I"ve been in high 400's ever since. I've been living a normal life for the past 11 years until this and would hate to have to deal with the blood disorder on top of IC.

I called my Hematologist who I don't see under December to tell him of these meds and he seemed to be fine with it, said I shouldn't be concerned. Easy for him to say. I might go get my platlets checked this week just for safety's sake. If it turns out that I cannot use these meds, what do any of you recommend?

Thanks again!

I recommend you speak your doc....Elmiron does come with this warning but it is very, very, very, rare....and when docs looked into it for me decided it wasn't a problem. I do recommend you try some of the alternatives in the ICN store
http://ic-network.com/cgi-bin/ustorekeeper.pl?command=goto&file=Alternatives.html
You can also try installations.

Don't worry.....there are things you can try ....and we can help you search for what treatment is right for you!!

Katrina has given some great advice! I am also on elmiron and elavil since last May. I am a nursing student and enrolled in a class where we just did a WBC count. I also took this course last spring (had to drop due to stress) so I was able to compare all of my WBCs to before I was on the meds. No change for the platelet count that I noticed! I did notice a low number of lymphocytes, which is to be expected with an autoimmune disorder such as IC. Take care.

I'm sure you already know that NSAIDS and Asprin can also thin your platelets. (I have blood clot issues, too.) You could check your platelet count from time to time, but it takes a while for elmiron to build up in your system. Your hemotologist isn't going to let you take something that will harm you.
