My aunt will be having a potassium test soon at the Dr.'s office. Is it painful? Will she be able to drive herself home, or should she have a driver? I have no experience with this particular test. Thanks. Ratchada

My experience with the potassium sensitivity test wasnt too bad. I drove myself home. When they put the potassium in, it will burn usually, however, they will instill some heparin after and it will numb the bladder. Hope this helps, maybe others have suggestions too! ICNNINA
I had a potassium test done and it burns and is uncomfortable but she should be able to drive home. Your Aunt may want someone there just for moral support though. They use marcaine after and can give you pain meds if you need them which a lot of people do after this test. It can cause a nasty flare too.

I had the potassium test, which was very painful!! I was very comfortable and upset, but I could drive home.
Good luck!

When a potassium solution is instilled directly into the bladder of an IC patient, it usually causes pain. It's considered by many to be a valid test for IC.
Usually after the instillation, the potassium solution is drained and a soothing solution is instilled to get rid of the pain.

Thanks Donna,
So if you have already been dx.'s for IC you don't need the Poatassium Test, right????

For Susan: I was diagnosed by hydrodistention; there was no question about the diagnosis and the potassium test isn't needed. Actually at the time I was diagnosed back in 1975 I don't think anyone had even thought of a potassium test.
