I have a question in regards to meds...I keep hearing alot about people who are on installations and meds and pain meds...what sort of medication are we talking about...my doctor has never mentioned to me medication to take except elimiron...is there something out there that you can take with DMSO (since it is not taking all my pain and discomfort away)

Thanks

There are all sorts of different meds that can be used for IC. Anti-depressants such as Elavil are used for its anticholinergic effects(dries things out)to cut down on night time trips to the potty as well and its pain relieving effects by cutting down the release of pain signals. Anti-inflammatories include meds such as Motrin and Naprosyn(to include the OTC Alleve). There is a new generation of anti-inflammatories such as Celebrex and Vioxx that are COX-2 inhibitors that are usually taken once a day and are easier on the GI tract. There are bladder meds, such as Pyridium and Urised that coat the bladder and turn your urine wonderful colors(smurf blue or Great Pumpkin orange. Pain meds(narcotic) come in all different types, strengths, and compositions that require a sit down with your doc to determine which is best for your specific case. They include oral meds such as Tylenol#3, Percocet, Vicodin and long acting meds such as Oxycontin and MS Contin. There are also duragesic patches that contain the powerful narcotic Fentanyl. There are tons of different meds, and it is trial and error that most of us find something that helps and allows us to enjoy life. The mission for you and your health care provider is to find the blend that works best for you. Please let me know if you need anything.

Barb

I have been reading up on Elmiron, and you should use caution if you take it with aspirin or any nsaid, as it greatly increases the chances of bleeding.

I'm confused why is this in the antibiotic forum it doesn't have to do with antibiotics?

There was no mention of antibiotics. I just think it should be moved to a more appropriate forum so the poster could get more feedback. Maybe one of the moderators could move it?

This post is from 2004...it's VERY old. At this point, I don't think the person is around anymore and if anyone has a question related to the original post, just open it up in the appropriate board.
