I have been taking bentyl for about 6 months and it was wonderful to finally have some relief from IBS...but now bentyl isn't working and I'm having very painful cramps and running to the bathroom...nothing new in my diet or anything like that....Anyone know of something that works better?

Hey there....my uro. recently prescribed hyoscyamine for me. It is a pill that you take sublingually (1-2 tabs every 4 hrs as needed). It has helped me...the bentyl had stopped working fo rme too.

Hope you get some help soon.

My mother has IBS quite severe I would say. They gave her Bentyl as well. She was also given the hyscopamine as mentioned above in the other post- that gave her urinary retention and she had to self cath. After hospitalization, lots of diagnostic GI tests and GI consult - she was switched to Librax instead of Bently. She was also put on Zelnorm for IBS. Have you heard of Zelnorm? You only can take Zelnorm if you have the IBS constipation not the IBS diarrhea. Hope this helps.

Do all IBS meds have antichologenerics in them? I am sensitive to that but it helped my IC pain tremendously. I get very agitated for some reason on Bentyl.

I take Pamine. My gastro said it was like Bentyl, with less side effects. It may cause urinary retention, though -- I read that on the label. I felt that effect a little at first, but it went away completely. However, I don't have IC. BUT, my mom has IC and she takes Pamine for the IBS and it doesn't bother her (and her IC is the kind where she has the retention problem). So, ask your doc about Pamine. I might be a good alternative. It's made by Kenwood Pharmaceuticals....I believe if you "Google" Pamine, you'll be able to find their web site.
