Just curious here. I was born premature weighing in a 2 lbs 15 ounces when I decided to join this crazy world. How many of you were born a preemy baby? I've had health problems all my life. My parents have told me that when I was born the delivering Dr. said that it would take years for me to catch up to other children as far as development.

Do you think that there is a connection between IC and early birth? If IC is a gentic disease then could this be one of the deciding factors in developing this?

I may be grasping at straws here but am curious what others think. I am trying to learn as much as I can about this demon that has taken over my body. I won't let it win that's for sure...knowledge is power and I want to be as strong as I can when it comes to this beast. Thanks for any and all input:)

Cathi,
How long did it take you to catch up with your peers, academically, etc.?
I had a preemie in '02.....He's 2 1/2 years old now....has finally gotten on the charts, normally, at 2.........And all the pediatricians in our "group" have said he is fully normal and on time as any "on time" two year old his age.
I would hope that being born preemie (3lb 15oz) doesn't help make him more susceptible to illnesses.
I also wasn't born premature either.
I know so many different things have happened to all of us............someday the mystery will be unraveled. :)

When I started to school I was ahead of everyone in the class. Thanks going out to my Mom and Dad as they had already taught me the basics. Body wise I was around 12 before I was considered normal for my age. Whatever normal is

Thanks for your input on this. Like I said I maybe grasping at straws to find an answer for me. I guesss if the Dr.s don't know then I sure want be able to find out :dizzy: guess I am having one of my blonde senior moments :lmao:

I was also a premie in '72 born at 5lbs. By today's standards that was a giant premie. :)
I have always had allergies, colds, flu, and seemingly more susceptable to illnesses than my sister and other peers growing up. My IC is an autoimmune disorder. It's causes can be any number of reasons but the most common thread that I have noticed is stress. There seems to be a lot of doctors who think of IC as an autoimmune disorder or there can be some kind of undetected infection deep within the cells of the bladder for some patients. I think the most recent research is indicating that many different types if IC are possible, resulting in the many controversies about treatment and symptoms. My piont is, causes of this disorder are widespead and therefore so are the treatments. The most important thing you can do is to pay attention to your body like never before and find a great doc who is willing to listen to individually you rather than treat you as just another patient. Good luck!

I was born 3 months premature. 2lbs 12 ounces. i have no clue if there is a connection between being premature and IC. But i also think that UTI's might have helped in causing IC.

I was full term, over 8 lbs and basically healthy as a child.

I think IC may have some genetic factors, especially since I found out my brother is having the exact same symptoms as I am. His doctor has yet to dx him with IC, but told him the inside of his bladder looked like raw hamburger! Both my brother and I were full term babies.

I was full term, but tiny, just 5lbs. I was hospitalized at 3 weeks old since I had pneumonia. Apparently when I came down the birth canal I picked up yeast from my mom who had a yeast infection and it went into my lungs. I was put on antibiotics, but have always had a tiny bladder and IC symptoms. I had my bladder out at age 30 and am doing fine! I am now 48. Judith

I was 8 lbs. 3 oz. at birth. Cute too! lol

When I turned 40 that's when everything seemed to start falling apart healthwise. Herniated discs, TMJ, IBS (though I've had that since started my periods at age 11-1/2), arthritis in my fingers, ovarian cyst, and now IC. I had a lot of colds and allergies all my life and tonsilitis when I was a child. I was on penicillin often. I became allergic to penicillin and sulfa drugs in my early 20's.
