Hi,
I was diagnosed with IC last year in April. My doctor put me on Elmiron. I felt pretty good until a couple of weeks ago. I started having the bladder pain again along with urethral pain. The urethral pain is the worst. I went to my family doctor who did a urine test that came back negative. I have an appt. with my urologist on Monday. But, I was wondering for people who have urethral symptoms, what medication(s) did your doctor put you on? Are they working? And how long did it take for the medications to "kick in"? Thanks

I'm sorry...I do not have any answers for you, but I did want to say :hi: :welcome: to ICN. I hope someone will come along who is able to help. :)

Even on Elmiron you can have a flare. I'm so sorry that you're feeling bad. I would think an antibiotic for UTI would help, like Levaquin or Bactrim. Hugs, Kathi

:hi: :welcome: Welcome to the ICN! For me antacids are the best thing for urethra pain.....I would do Prelief, baking soda and water, Prilosec OTC, and cold. I have no experience with meds other than my GERD meds helping that type of pain, sorry.
I hope you get the help you need and feel better very soon. If there is ever anything else I can do to help you please feel free to contact me.

Thank you for the replies. I am going to try the Prelief. I've been trying the baking soda & water, but so far that hasn't helped. I used the Prelief for a little while last year when all of this began. I stopped using it when my symptoms disappeared. Thanks again :)

Hello again,
No, I'm not on Elavil. I was planning to talk to my urologist about prescribing it for me. I hope he will. I have an appt. with him on Monday. Thank you :)

Uristat really helps me, and rather quickly. It is over-the-counter pyridium. Hope it helps!

My primary symptoms are urethral burning and pain. I take Elavil and when it's really bad, I take Urised. I also take Calcium Citrate (Citrical) twice a day, and that also helps a lot.

My primary symptom is also urethral pain - I just took a week long dose of doxycycline (antibiotic) to see if that helps and it really has...but I don't know if that will last or not. My Dr. seems to think nobody should just suffer from urethritis and that it should just "go away", but we'll see...

Is there a specific ACE inhibitor that is bladder friendly. I really need it for my blood pressure, but the one I am taking irritates the urethra. thanks Linme

The only thing that helped me was putting lidocaine into the eurethra a couple times a day. It cuts the pain in half for awhile.
