Vistaril dosing?

What is the starter dose that you guys have taken of vistaril/atarax? My doctor gave me 25mg to take at bedtime, every night. I know about vistaril for sedation and anxiety, etc, but not for the use in IC......I just wonder if he gave me a large enough dose.

I went to my check up and my biopsy reports were really bad. Said I had a severe case of chronic IC, but no cancer or malignancy......at least thats good. Its just hard to read it from a pathologists point of view....sigh.

Hope you guys are doing well. Been busy around here with school starting, car pools that leave me DYING to go to the bathroom......it'll get better, but at least the first week is OVER!

I just started taking 25 mg of atarax nightly last week. I think that most doctors like to start out at a lower dose to see how it effects you. This way, if you have a bad reaction, hopefully it won't be as bad as it would be at a higher dose. Also, everyone is different, so 25 mg may be enough to help some people. I would give the 25 mg a chance to work and see if it helps you. I've read that it takes several weeks to several months to start seeing the effects from taking this. Then you can talk with your doctor about increasing the dose, if necessary. I'd rather start at a lower dose to see if I can handle the side effects, especially the sleepiness, before upping the dose too high and not being able to get out of bed in the morning.

How long have you been on vistaril? Are you on any other meds for IC? Sometimes it just takes finding the right combination, or cocktail as my uro calls it, to help get control over the ic. My uro will only start one medication at a time to see how it effects me, good or bad. If you start multiple meds at the same time and have a bad reaction, it's hard to tell which one caused it. Discuss your concerns with your doctor.

I started out at 25 mg of Vistaril at night. About a month later my uro bumped it up so that I was taking 25mg in the morning and 25 mg at night. The drowsiness went away after about a week. :)

Thanks guys. I dont have much problem with the drowsiness but it does help me to sleep all night which is a wonderful side effect. I do have terrible, and strange dreams taking this though which I thought was odd.

Everyone is different tho and I do appreciate the personal experiences with the vistaril.

This is the max I can take or I would sleep constantly. It helps alot though. I take the liquid so I can "up or down" the dose depending how I feel.
