Does anyone else have this? It feels like urgent need to pee and nothing happens for awhile. I have to concentrate on images like waterfalls, water hose, etc because I heard pushing down makes it worse and is harmful. If I am patient I can pee. This isn't an every time thing but does happen.

I have the same symptom. However, it used to be worse for me -- in fact, I often needed to catheterize myself to get all of the urine out of my bladder.
Recently, I switched uros, and the new one put me on a drug called Flomax. This is an alpha blocker that's usually given to men with enlarged prostates to make it easier for them to urinate... it relaxes the muscles at the bladder neck a bit. This drug seems to have helped me quite a bit. Since starting it, I have only had to catheterize myself once, and my urine stream seems to start a lot faster than before.

Hi all, and thanks for answering. Sometimes I feel so alone with this darn disease. I know I will never have to feel that way again.
Gentle healing,

As far back as I can remember...even preIC... I have always had what some call a "shy bladder". If I use a public restroom and someone else is in there using it also, I cannot pee until they either flush their toilet, turn on the water to wash their hands, or leave. If someone is waiting for me to finish so they can go, I cannot pee. I just forget it and go later...which can cause other problems. :yikes: Even if my husband dares to come too near to the bathroom while I am trying to go...clamp down city.

I have the shy bladder thing going on too. Only since I've had IC though. My bladder was fine before I got IC.

I am the same way...and Sharon, a lot like you. I can usually always go....but have to wait for my body to be ready.....when I flare ....the wait is longer and harder to bear....and I often have to give up and cone back later.

I use a piece of toilet paper and press it against my urethra and most of it comes out at once. I wouldn't recomend doing that if your urethra was soar, though.
I also am the same way, unless I have had a lot of water to drink, and then it is easier, you are definitely not alone in that respect, hugs Iris. :toilet: :grouphug: :flower:
Yeah, happens to me if I don't drink enough water or if I have to sit all day.
yup happens to me all the time too, usually if i've eaten something sweet or meds have caused it too!
i also have the shy bladder thing and its starting to get really bad, i end up going home just because i cant face the public bathroom thing some times!

I have this problem also. It seems as though sometimes it is aggrivated by certain pain pills I am taking at the time which can cause retention. Just an idea maybe. I also take oxytrol patch which sometimes makes it harder for me to go especially when I don't drink enough liquids. The urgency to go is still as bad as if the bladder is full but only a tiny bit comes out sometimes. I hope it gets better for you soon. Pushing it out isn't good trust me! It actually makes my muscles spasm even more and it takes even longer to come out then. Take care I hope that helped somehow - Chris :) :dogrun:

Thanks for answering all you who did. I have another variation on it now. Hesitancy then sarting and stopping. Sometimes the stopping is for awhile longer than I'd imagined. I have a technique of imagining I am a garden hose watering the flowers with pure water. And if it stops, (the flow), I say, "Keep on going". It takes some concentration and eventually works but is anoying when I think of those who just pee and that's it. Thank you everyone for the support.

Yes, I have this problem too. I just usually sit there and do my start and stop thing. Sometimes if it's really a problem and I think I'm not emptying my bladder well I get in a hot shower. That usually relaxes me enough.

For those women who avoid or have difficulty urinating in public restrooms -- or in other situations where someone else is present -- you may be suffering from a social phobia called paruresis, or shy bladder.
This condition, in its extreme form, can be debilitating since it can heavily interfere with relationships, work, and travel. It is estimated that about 10% of paruretics fall into this category.
The good news is that a treatment program is available, consisting of cognitive-behavioral therapy.
The International Paruresis Association (IPA) is a Baltimore-based nonprofit organization that was established in 1997 to help those with this affliction, as well as educate the health care professionals who treat them. For further information, go to the organization's website: www.paruresis.org. A moderated Discussion Board, similar to this one, is available
As coordinator for women who have paruresis, I am in communication with other females who share their ideas, resources, and personal stories with each other.
I am aware that because women are far more susceptible to UTI's than men, they are encouraged to drink plenty of liquids and urinate frequently. Therein lies the "Catch 22" -- a woman who is suffering from paruresis cannot do that, and many say they are loathe to use a catheter because they fear the risk of infection.
If you have any questions, you can write to me at olmert@aol.com.
Best,
Carol
Does anyone get bubbles in their urine from "pushing?"

I've never heard anyone say that. I really don't know. Sorry.

I also have this problem. I will feel like if I can't get to the bathroom fast enough that I'm going to have an accident and when I get there, nothing. One time I went to the ER because of asthma right after I had surgery to remove a rather large cyst and an enlarged ovary. They wouldn't let me out of the bed to go to the bathroom, I had to go so bad that I thought I was going to wet the bed, when they brought me a bed pan I couldn't go, how embarassing. This is when I found out that in certain positions, I can't go. It took my husband helping me to get up and sit on the bed pan and holding it for twenty minutes before I could go. When I finally went it was so much that I over flowed it.
