My name is chloe' Brewer and i am having a cystocopy on wensday and also urodynamics and I'm really scared but I know that I have a good doctor I'm just really worried about having medicine afterwards b/c I know that I'm going to be hurting and they have me on Loratabs right now but I've been on them for about 5 years now and I don't think they will help me afterwards and I don't know if my new doctor will give me anything for my pain. My new doctor is Dr. Zaslau. Anyone that can help me I would appreiciate.

Hi,

All of the symptoms, tests, treatments, medicines, etc. with IC can be pretty scary, huh? When I went for my cystoscopy, a close friend told me to go home and sit in a hot tub of water afterwards. The doctor gave me some pain medicine before I left the clinic, but the hot bath made me feel like I was doing something to help. And I think it really did! You will be in my prayers. Isn't this forum great? We are NOT alone!
Hugs from Alabama,

I would ask your doctor before the test if he will give you something more stonger for after the test just to be on the safe side.

thanks for the suggestion. I really appreciate it. I hope it works out that he does. but what if he refuses to do so. The pain clinic in my area has already refused to see me b/c they said the don't deal with chronic pelvic pain

I do have one suggestion. I find it helps me when I will be having a cystoscopy or catheter if I relax. The way I do it is to concentrate on relaxing my pelvic muscles, at the same time breathing slowly and evenly. It really does help.

Sending warm encouraging hugs,
Donna

You might want to ask your doctor if you can take Pyridium if you're being catheterized. That always helps me for the urethral burn after catheter... Definitely ask though, I don't know if the lovely orange color Pyridium turns pee would be a problem!

Hi, and :welcome: to the ICN! You've gotten some good advice here already. I agree-- ask your doctor if you could take some Pyridium before the test. This medicine makes catheters more comfortable, but it does turn your pee bright orange. Also, ask him if he could prescribe something stronger for just after the test -- just a few pills, 2-5, should be just fine.

Donna is right too, relaxing the pelvic muscles is KEY to being more comfortable... I know it's hard, as many of us tighten them when we're nervous, but if you do some deep breathing as they are inserting and removing the catheters it can really help reduce discomfort.

You may want to bring either an ice pack or a ThermaCare heat patch (or Both :) ) with you to your appointment, depending on whether you find heat or cold soothing. That way, if you're burning you can put the ice pack on your crotch right away on the drive home. You can also put the ThermaCare patch on your abdomen to relieve any cramping pains you may be experiencing. Then, when you get home, take your pain stuff with lots of water and then, as someone else suggested, hop in a hot bath with a silly magazine for a while and just RELAX. You did it!! :)
