I am in the same situation except all the "training" I got was as much as the directions on the sheet the nurse sent me home with. I was suprised that she did not want me to cath myself before leaving .... but not so the case. The concoction I use is for when the pain gets really bad.....and also before having sex. I have not tried it as of yet. Just got the meds for the instill and the box of caths 3 days ago. I do hope it works especially sexually. It would be nice to not hurt during or afterwards ( though I imagine the next day will be the same .....heck though maybe not).
Anyway.......Good luck!!!

I have a question is it ok to have a install with infection? I just took first antibiotic pill . Before the treatment I had no idea I had uti but since getting it it's burning like a wild fire...

It is best to wait to have any type of instill until after the infection has cleared...hmm. I'm surprised they did the instill with your infection!

Anyway, self-cathing is a bit weird the first time or two, but at least for me, it was really easy to get the hang of. I have even done it in the back seat of a car in an emergency when no bathroom was available, and managed to keep everything sterile (I don't recommend trying that until you're used to doing it at home first tho :) ). I'm sure it will be okay for you too! The most important things are to remember to first, relax (if you're tense, it's hard to find your urethra in the first place, and then it's hard to get the catheter into your bladder)... and second, remember NOT TO RUSH. The more you rush, the more likely you are to contaminate something & give yourself a UTI.

I will stop my rant now and say hope u feel better soon.

I have done instillations while having a UTI, but my circumstances are a little different. I have to irrigate due to clot retention, so I do an instillation after I have completed the irrigation. If I do not have to irrigate or self-cath due to clot retention, I don't usually do an instillation with a UTI. You really don't want to send any bacteria up into the kidney. If an instillation is necessary you must be extra careful with sterile technique.

Try not to worry about self-cathing. After the first few times it is like a piece of cake. I was able to self cath while I was 8 months preganant and didn't even need a mirror! Once you learn the technique, you won't even give it a second thought.

Good Luck, and feel better.

My uro has always postponed instillations until the UTI is gone.

Kelly,
if you take a treatment while you have an UTI it will be more painful so my doctor tells me to not do one while i have a UTI.

I think yesterday they were in a hurry. The office is moving and I was last patient. They usually are wonderful and I am not angry at all. I would have never guessed I had a infection.. I actually was feeling great better than I had in awhile. She put the strip in my urine and right away put the install in.. Then checked the strip. They usually do check the strip first. Thanks for all the advice and support.

Hello Ladies, after having the pain pump for four years, my new uro decided he would try to do the instillations(I guess that is what you call it) he said it would help with the urgency and frequency, well it smelled terrible like fresh garlic or old garlic just kind of stinky, anyway they put these two cup fulls in and she said I could get up and get dressed, as soon as I got up it ran back out luckly I still had the paper I used to drape myself with I soaked it up into the paper, and made it down the elavator to the next floor and to the rest room to finish emptying my bladder. Is that the way it is to work, what is the real purpose in it. I felt more cramping afterwards. Now they are talking about installing the elmiron directly into the bladder, I told Doc I could not take Elmiron that it made bleeding ulcers in my nose and mouth. He said that would not happen when you install it directly into the bladder. Take care and keep well, I keep learning more each day about this dreadful disease.

Don't know anything about Elmiron instills, but the first time I had the DMSO cocktail, I had to lie very still because my bladder was spasming. Barely made it to the bathroom after holding only 10 min. It was only that bad the first time. After that I was able to hold it the 20 min no problem & even get dressed before leaving the room. (Definitely better than sprinting down the hall wrapped in a sheet!) I generally did stay lying down to hold it the 20 min though. I also took Pyridium the morning before & about 2 hours before instill took Darvocet.

The treatments helped me a lot & I'll be going back once a month for them for the next 6 months. The next one will be the first I'll try without Darvocet. Am hoping I'll then be able to drive myself to/from!

Good luck, I hope you find some relief soon.

I couldn't tolerate the DMSO, you should hold it for at least 20 minutes. I had the same problem, bladder spasms and nothing would go in or out of the catheter. I am trying Elmiron instilled now, but will not go back for more. I have been having terrible urethra pain and bladder spasms. I am having vaginal pain too. I can't do anymore. I am so depressed because nothing works for me. My Dr. said, if the Elmiron instilled doesn't work, I should consider bladder removal. I have tried: diet, interstim, ellavil, vesteril, detrol, detropan, hydrodistenstions, DMSO, Elmiron orally and instilled. I Give Up!
