Can someone tell me where to find the actual procedure for performing a hydrodistension. It seems that somewhere I read that the procedure consisted of expanding the bladder, releasing the fluid and then expanding it a second time before examination. Is this correct and where can I find that document to give to my Uro??? Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

There's information in the Patient handbook at http://www.ic-network.com/handbook/
I had my last one a week ago today and I can tell you what happens to me. I watched it on a TV screen while I was in the OR. The bladder is observed during the entire procedure. Fluid is instilled into the bladder, expanding it; then it is at least partially emptied out and then more is instilled. My uro keeps instilling more until the bleeding begins, then empties it back out. I spent one night in the hospital with a continuous irrigation of Solu Cortef, which seems to help me a great deal with any pain. I had red urine for about 24 hours after the procedure.

Thanks for the info Donna. I just want to make sure my Uro has all the info he needs. We are learning this IC stuff together.

Steve,
I had my hydodr/cysto just last Thursday. It was under general as an outpatient. I saw the picture of my bladder in recovery and was home by noon. My only problem was that I got really sick from the Vicodin the next day. There are great descriptions at several sites if you do a google on "intersitial cystitis and hydrodistension". I always go to the .edus and .orgs first but ICN is still my favorite. I think I have logged 40 hours here since I was diagnosed. Hope your procedure goes well. Linda

I was my uro's first IC patient after he opened his practice. He had seen IC during his residency, so I was diagnosed fairly quickly. I especially appreciate him because even though I was his only IC patient for quite some time, he went to the effort to research and went to seminars out of town to learn more about the disease. I still am seeing him almost 30 years later --- and he now has many IC patients.
