I had my appt. with my pc today (he's the one that writes for my meds.). Under my uro's recomendation, I was given an Rx for 80mg Oxycodone SR (generic 80mg Oxycontin). I was taking 60mg MS Contin (morphine) every 8 hours.

I will be taking one tablet every 12 hours. My uro recommended that I use Morphine Sulfate sublingual for breakthrough pain, but my gp only wrote for 10 tablets. He said he hates to see me taking sooooo much narcotic. He said if I needed to use more he would think about writing a bigger Rx. So, it's a wait and see thing.

When I went to pick up my pills, the pharmacist filled it with MS Contin. So, I drove back and told them it was the wrong stuff.
The "Tech" got nasty and told me that she was sorry it was wrong but that she couldn't give me my copay back or change it to the right drug!!! Of course I insisted that the pharmacy manager come over to speak with me. He said he was sorry that his techs thought MS Contin was generic Oxycontin. Gosh, I sure hope someone with a morphine allergy doesn't die from the pharmacy's ignorance!

After a long day I finally came home with the generic Oxycontin.
AND it only cost me $11.53 for both Rx's!!! A far cry from the brand name Oxycontin price!!!
I'm looking forward to seeing if I can put some weight back on now. :)

Cheers!

Spongemom,

I recently had to quit using the Duragesic patch and was pleasantly surprised to discover Oxy was finally generic, at least the 80mg str is.

So that was nice.

My pain doc too seems more willing to increase my maintenance narcotics than give me more breakthru meds. It took me three months to convince him to up my Dilaudid from qty 100 to 150. I don't really understand the logic: they're all going to make you physically dependent. What's it matter?

But, unlike some pain docs in this town, mine is not a "pill pusher." My first one was. It was, "What do you want?" I'd tell him and he'd write scripts for almost anything I wanted as long as he could get me out of there in under ten minutes.

When he was getting $80 from the insurance company per visit, he was happy to see me. When they cut it to $12, they turned nasty and I bailed them in a hurry--which is what he wanted of course.

My pain doctor, knowing how costly my disease is, is content to collect a GP's reimbursement instead of a specialists. He's a wonderful guy.
