bladder transplant?

I just had a friend ask me "can't they just give you a new bladder, they transplant other organs, like kidneys, liver, heart, etc".

I laughed at her but it is a good question.

Oh my goodness my SIL just asked me that! I had no answer for her, except to say I hadn't heard of it.

They can give you a bladder that's made from your own tissue, but, and it's a big but --- they can't (so far) give you the complex nerve system that tells your bladder when it's full, or lets you urinate, or keeps you from leaking all the time --- so the best they can do if they remove your bladder is to give you a pouch, which you have to catheterize regularly, or leave some of the bladder in place, in which case, the new bladder is likely to develop IC.

It's a nice thought though.
