View Full Version : Any suggestions on what to do for pain????
Hi, I'm 17 and was diagnosed with IC a little under a year ago. I've been seeing my urologist since then and have been very happy with him. He has put me on Elmiron and Hydroxizine and my pain has definitly decreased. Pain during and after sex has also been better for the past 3 months. I finally have been feeling better these past couple months but i guess i spoke too soon because for the past 2 weeks I have been experiancing pain again. One of my main concerns is pain during and after sex. When it happens I usually let my bf know and he is very understanding and we stop, but I don't want to stop anymore. Sometimes it hurts sometimes its fine. I was wondering if anyone could give me any suggestions on what to do for pain and is there any medications that help for pain (like a pain killer) that my uro would prescribe me?
Also, since I'm 17 my mother goes to the urologist with me I don't want to bring up any questions relating to sex because it is uncomfortable. What should I do?

Wow Tough call being 17, I guess you should just go into the office alone.. Tell your mom that you really would like her to not go in with you..
Pain is very normal during and after sex. Also there is a possibility you may have pfd.
Or... you can sit down with your mom and be honest with her and tell her you are sexually active.. are you on any type of B/C?
I sure wish I had an answer for you.. If it helps you any I have a 16 year old daughter and I would her rather tell me then hide it and end up pregnant.. sorry if thats harsh...

Thanks for the reply. My mother knows I'm, sexually active. I used to be on birth control and she takes me to the gyno. It's just an uncomfortable subject too discuss with your mother. What's pfd???

well one way to not worry about pain after sex is no sex but we can't let IC take over everything.
here is some things that may help
use the bathroom before sex ( i do this always in hopes to stop an infection hitting also plus less urine in the bladder helps)
try diff. ways exp. I know this can be painful but you need to find the way that feels the best with no pain.
after use the rest room again take a hot shower (that helps my bladder)
then either use a heating pad or ice on your bladder (which ever feels the best to you) I got to where i will start with an ice pack because i take a hot shower after if the ice doesnt help i go back to heat but that is just me.
and most important relax and don't be scared if you are scared that its going to hurt then its going to hurt. Talk to your doctor about B.C pills unless your ready for a baby some people has said that B.C pills has helped them go into short remission but B.C pills work diff. on diff. People you may have to swich around B.C pills until you find the one that works best for you and doesn't make you flare.
sending you hugs and prayers

whew lol thats good that you are open with mom :) PFD is Pelvic Floor Disfunction... I would still ask mom if she would mind waiting out in the waiting room for you.. tell here there are some things you would like to discuss with your dr that you are embarrased to talk about infront of her.. I know its gonna be hard to do that...
Rhonda is right to prevent pain after sex is not to have sex
:( This is something most of us IC'ers encounter..

Rhonda and Cindy had some great advise. alternating between heat and cold before and after is very helpful....and resting before and after is very helpful. In the Pain Management section of this board I have a post on pain management ideas ....it has other things that may help if download the list on the fourth attachement.
Experimenting with different possitions is always recommended. Good luck.

I am sorry to hear of someone so young in this kind of pain. The best part is we have eachother to give suggestions on how to cope with ic.
I have ic, endo, adhessions disease, and ibs. Along with a few obtuse tumors that rupture on a regular basis. My bf and I have explore many different positions to help sex not be so painful. One is he lays on his side (hip), me on my back, I put one leg over him, the other one between his legs, then I control the penetration, I know when to stop and what my limitations are. It really helps the pain. I can't say it enough foreplay, foreplay, foreplay, and did I mention foreplay. And always keep in mind, sometimes it isn't going to work, so you will have to find other ways to satisfy eachother. The most erotic part of your body, is your mind, that is where your orgasim begins.
I have somemore suggestions, but you should im me at yahoo, graceimnot2096, I will keep you in my prayers.

Could you have vulvodynia also with the IC? Do some reading about it on this website. I'm hoping you don't but it is common with IC patients.
