I am in the process of trying to get pregnant and I have a question about what others have been told by their doctors about c-section vs vaginal delivery. My urogynecologist adamently recommends a c-section for his IC patients because he says that a vaginal delivery can do more harm to my already compromised bladder. I was just wondering if anyone else has been told that. I see that others have delivered vaginally and did okay while others delivered vaginally and had problems. I am inclined to go with the c-section. Thoughts?

:hi: Jill and :welcome:
Sorry to disappoint you. I am unable to answer your questions. I am way beyond that time of my life and came down with IC after menopause.
I saw that you were the newest member and that this was your first post. I just wanted to welcome you to ICN and tell you that I am glad you found us...not glad you have IC.
I am sure someone will be replying to your post who can help you. I hope you will be posting soon with the good news that your baby is on the way. :)

Thank you for the welcome. I was diagnosed with IC last February, one month before I got married. Nice timing ;(. Anyway, I have been doing fairly well with it. I am pretty lucky in that I don't have the severity of symptoms at this point that others do (knock on wood). Mostly it is just irritating, no pun intended. I was on Elmiron for a year. Love that stuff. But since starting the conception process my doctor has taken me off and put me on ditropan. That works pretty well so far.
I am glad I found some way to talk to others to see what they have been told by their doctors and to get their experiences.
Thanks.

Hi, I am a newlywed too and I am starting to think about getting pregnant. I have had IC for a very long time and I've thought alot about C-section. I have heard of both deliveries for IC patients but I think that C-section would be much less risk of making my bladder worse. I haven't seen my dr. yet as me and husband just decided to get me ready to try to get pregnant. It's definately something I'll be needing to discuss with my Dr.
Good luck!:)

Hi there,
I had 3 c-sections, two before ic and one after, just 6 weeks ago. I had them because during the first labour I had trouble pushing and the baby got "stuck" so the other two were recommended as repeats. It was decided that for both reasons, ic and pelvic smallness, that a c-section was better.
Hope that is helpful. Also, my recovery from the c-section was just fine....after about 2 weeks, I was myself again. Even with 3 little ones at home,
Good luck to you,
Sue

I'm really surprised your doctor would recommend a c-section. I've never heard of anyone's IC getting worse after delivering, but that doesn't mean it won't. I just think it's strange that he would advise a major surgery where things have more of a chance of going wrong. I did ask my ob and he won't do it unless he absolutely has to.

Hi,
I had all five of my children vaginally with no problems at all. I really thing Dr.'s are too quick to do C-sections now adays. With my last delivery I really think my IC has gotten better.

I'm so glad to see that some of you guys have had vaginal without your IC getting worse. Maybe I can save the tummy I'm working so hard to keep. I'd much prefer to avoid a C-section.

You might want to contact a support group called The International Cesarean Awareness Network. (I.C.A.N) They are a non-profit group that educates women on unnecessary/necessary cesareans and vaginal birth after cesarean VBAC. I was active with this group about 15 years ago, planning a VBAC. You might be able to find a website for them or check with your local library.

I felt the best I had in a long time during my pregnancy, but wasnt sure what the last trimester would bring:confused:
At about 30 weeks my DR had talked about early induction because of the severity of pain being caused on my bladder. So at 38 weeks I was admitted to hosp. To be induced but still hopping to have a vaginal birth. After about 30hrs of labour I couldnt take the pain on my bladder any more so a c-section was done ( much to my releif at the time let me tell you) Everything went well & it didnt take that long to recover, thanks to the help of hubby & my wounderful parents. However for quiet awhile after I did really regret MY decision I wished I could have held off a bit longer to see if things would have happpened naturally, This is only my personal thoughts & many would disagree but it didnt feel like I had given birth to my son it felt like I had just gone to the hosp. & picked him up. ( man it shouldnt have after all I had been through) After time these feelings subsided & I have my presious little man who is now almost 2yrs. You love that child no matter how you give birth to them.
I hope you dont mind me sharing my feelings on this matter & i'm sure you will make the choice that suits you & for the recorde It didnt make my IC any worse after.
Good Luck
Andrea :)
My gyno is among the "Best Doctors in the US 2004." She and my female uro suggest c section because of my pelvic floor problems. She actually said a vaginal deliver could make it worse. (NOTE: I have nerve damage from stim, so my muscles and nerves are more shot than typical PFD)
I am enjoying this. I hope we hear from more out there.
