I've become allergic to Lortab and I'm wondering what I can ask the doctor to give me. Any suggestions? I've taken the Lortab on and off for several years and now I itch like crazy when I take one. I tried taking a Benadryl with them and I still itch. Keeps me up all night. Thanks

This is something you need to discuss with your doctor. I could tell you what I take, but wouldn't have any idea about what your body might tolerate.

I hope your doctor has some good suggestions and you find another one equally as effective.

Sending warm healing thoughts,
Donna

Thanks Donna,

I have an appointment on the 14th of July. Hopefully I can make it until then. Going to Myrtle Beach on the 5 through the 10th so I'm being extra careful of what I eat and praying that I won't have any flares.

That is so odd. The exact same thing happened to me! I have been taking lortab 10/500 for about 3 yrs now for the breakthrough pain, & now it makes me itch. After 3 yrs? That's crazy! So now my doc only prescribes me demerol. But when I itch, it just won't stop. I have even scratched so much I gave myself scares on my feet. Nothing makes the itching stop. Try the demerol. It has no codiene in it. That's what my doc tells me i'm allergic to. Hope you feel better & stop scratching!LOL

I hate that about the Lortab. I was wondering what they could give me. Well, I'm glad the demerol helps you. I will see what he tells me. I thought it might be the codeine but I was hoping not. I've also became allergic to the Protonix that I was taking for my stomach. I have taken it for 4 years. I'm trying to do without anything for that right now. So far, so good!

I know that Lortab, and vicodin are supposed to be the same thing. When I take the Lortab, I itch, not with the vicodin. I'mwondering if it's one of the inactive ingredients. You know how the Lortab had the little blue specks, maybe the food coloring or something.

I hope that's true just about the Lortab. I know a lot of pain medicine has the codeine it and I was wondering what I would get next. I mentioned a few months go to my md that I thought I was becoming allergic to the Lortab. He said I hope not because then you would have to go to a different class of pain pills. I guess that is why he had be try the Benydryl with it. It worked the first time but not after that. I notice that a lot take Percocet. Doesnt that also have codeine?

I don't know what Percocet has in it. I've never taken it.

My doctor just shakes his head when I say Vicodin not Lortab. I believe he thinks I'm crazy but, there is a difference.

Do you take two Benadryl? Try that.

No, I haven't tried 2 Bendryal. At the time I was taking Allegra and I didn't know if I should take 2 of them. I will try 2 the next time I take Lortab. I'm not taking the Allegra right now. I'm going to Myrtle Beach the 5th of July and I'm hoping I can get there and back without a flare but it's doubtful.

I have my flexrill ready to pack along with pyridum plus, ditropan, heating pads and Lortab in case I really get lots of pain. I'm thinking postive. I'm leaving on the 5th and coming back the 10th and having NO PAIN! :D

Percocet is oxycontin, I took it. It has codiene in it.

Derby

Oxycontin is oxycodone time released over a twelve hour period. Percocet is oxcodone and acetaminophen that is taken every 6 hours. I hope that this was helpful.

In addition to Derby's response re. info on Percocet - it does not actually have codiene in it. Oxycodone is a synthetic codiene (always misspell this word ?), so some people that have an allergy to codiene can in fact take it. Lortab, Vicodin, etc., have Hydrocodone, which is another synthetic codiene. Some people can also be allergic to hydrocodone, but perfectly fine with oxycodone. Hope that helps, as well...

Well, I hope I can make it until the 14th to see what he will give me. If I have pain before then I will take the Lortab with 2 Bendryl and see if that works. Thanks for the replies.

About the itching, I ave had allergies all my life and periodicly I just itch eveywhere, when I was young they would have me wear glove at night (cut off my finger nail as low as possible) and load me up with Benedryl. I still go through bouts of itchyness and hives, it is worse when I flare and If I have to take the MAXdoses of all my meds and a sleeping pill I feel like my skin is crawlig. My urologist caims it is not related to the IC but it sure does coinside. I take ULTRAM (TRAMADOL) for pain, i do not think it is codien? IS it? Check the drug glossery but your MD sould be able to find an alterntive- by the way since my diagnoses I have become allergic to pyridium (hives and vomitng) and I am not allowed to tak vicodine anymore becauseit stoppd working and started giving me halucinations. So I guess it is normal to have to chang meds once in a while.

Best of Luck, Enjoy your trip.

Thanks Angela for the information. I find that I'm becoming allergic to lots of things also since IC. I just to quit the Protonix for my stomach so I'm going to try and to without that one if I can. I think my dr. did mention Ultram so that is probably what he will have be try. I also got real sensitive skin now. I guess it's always going to be something. ALso could not take Actonel for my bones or the miacalcium.

When I had my allergic reaction 2 the lortab my doc gave me a cortisone shot & within a hour I felt better. That is the only thing that made the scratching stop. Then he gave me prednisone just 2 take 4 a few days, & it really helped! Hope u get some relief! The scratching & the pain. :hi:

Are you taking an Antihistimine or Antidepressant?

sunshine_77us
07-02-2004, 01:51 AM
I'm only taking Bendryl right now. I was taking Allegra but could not tell any difference. I'm not taking antipressent and so far he has said nothing about me taking one.

I have taken ultram and for me it seems to be very effective. Like every other pain medication I have tried, it does cause nausea so my doctor orders phenergan to take with it, which probably makes it work better.

It's definitely worth a try --- and many physicians are willing to order ultram.

Hugs,
Donna

Please be careful taking Benadryl with pain medication. My pain doctor told me not to take the two together because because it cause extreme drowsiness and slow your heart rate down, to the point of it being dagerous. When I have trouble sleeping Benadryl is the only thing that helps. But now that my doctor told me that, I try not to take it unless someone is with me to wake me up and make sure I am okay.

Lissa R

I always worried about taking so many pills before I went to bed. I'll ask my doctor about the Benadryl and pain medication.
Thanks

I guess that's the difference in doctors. My doctor had me taking Benadryl with my pain meds, Vicodin, after having my gall bladder removed. That's how I found out about Benadryl helping with the pain meds itching.
