Hi all,
It's been a while since I've written. I continue to be tired and have been dealing with frequent urination, which I attributed to IC. However, with the latest happenings, a failed glucose test, I strongly suspect that I do have gestational diabetes. I took the 3 hour test today and was exhausted afterwards. And now all the pieces seem to fit. The frequency in urination was there, but it differed from IC in that there was always a huge volume. And, I just been feeling so tired -- I was really hoping for a better 2nd trimester. I get the final results tomorrow. Has anyone else been diagnosed with gestational diabetes? What are the symptoms and how are they controlled (diet modification?). It always seems that something is going on. Great deal of stress with work and we're transitioning Ellen to a new daycare. She kept getting bit (by a fellow classmate who's also 3) and Ellen would trantrum every day before going and complain that all this other child would do is bite and hit her. It has been a wrenching few weeks. Sorry to ramble on and on. Any input on gest. diabetes would be welcome (and about daycare experiences too).
Hugs to all,

Gestational diabetes isn't unusual at all. The treatment your doctor orders will be entirely dependent on the severity. Hopefully you will be able to control it with diet and oral medications. If your pregnancy is being managed by an OB specialist, you may want to consult with your primary care physician as well as the OB.
Sending warm hugs,

Hi there,
I had a baby 6 weeks ago and I also failed the glucose tolerance test at 34 weeks. I did the 3 hour test and it came back that I did not have gestational diabetes, but was considered glucose intolerant (a precursor to gestational diabetes, sort of a warning sign to watch the carbs and sugars). I was asked to monitor my blood sugar levels 4 times a day with a glucose monitor (don't worry, it doesn't hurt at all) and limit sugars and eat proteins with carbs, etc... someone (a dietician probably) will explain this all to you and of course you will be carefully monitored until delivery. It is very common in pregnancy and usually goes away afterwards. They checked my baby's blood as well, after birth, just to monitor her sugar levels. She was just fine, as were my levels after her birth. Try not to worry about this very treatable and common condition. Mine was controlled nicely by diet alone.
Good luck!!

Melly,
I'm sorry you failed.....but I think it's more common than we think. I failed mine too. Had to see a dietician. The group of them put me on a diabetic diet. I had to keep up with taking my blood, writing the numbers down, and calling them in on Monday. My mother went to a few of my check-ups and she said the diet was very similiar to weight watchers, with modifications for eating for two.:)
So with keeping your numbers down, hopefully yours can be controlled with diet too. The dietician told me if I couldn't keep it down with the diet only, I would get the shots.....No pill in-between like regular diabetics. So that helped me stay on the diet wisely.....I didn't want to give myself shots.
One thing that liked to have killed me was chinese food shot those sugar levels high....so I had to stop all chinese food till after he was born...
Let us know how you are!! It's getting closer my friend!

Hi all,
Thanks so much for all the feedback. It has been very reassuring and comforting to know that others have had similar experiences. I got the results back yesterday from the three hour test and to my surprise they came back normal. However, I have decided to modify the diet some, really backing off on the carbs, and I have started to feel better.
The frequent urination I guess is being caused by IC. I think the drink they require you to drink really causes flares. I had one the whole day afterwards -- a real nuisance. I will be so glad when my pregnancy is over, although the thought of having a new baby is daunting. I worry about the new baby, because of the IC (mainly the Elmiron I took when I didn't know I was pregnant). IC adds a level of complexity on top of everything. It is so difficult to manage when you're not pregnant, and being pregnant makes even more challenging.
Thanks again for all the support. Counting down, only 13 weeks to go.

Melly,
I took Elmiron for 3 weeks before I knew I was pregnant. My baby is just fine and is 6 weeks old today. Do not worry. Although I did too, I read somewhere that the Doctor that started using DMSO hasn't had any women who have used DMSO unknowingly, have any problems with their babies. Enjoy the last trimester of your pregnancy, because it won't be long before you'll be having sleepless nights...not because of IC, but because of your hungry baby!!!!!!
Good luck!
Sue
