Tylenol PM dry mouth

Hi!

I am curious whether anyone else has had dry mouth problems with Tylenol PM (which apparently contains Benadryl). I have taken one per night for the last two nights, and no matter how much water I drink I feel as if my mouth is dry five minutes later. It's a shame, because I do think it might be beneficial for the IC, and it also helps me sleep if my husband is out of town (I get nervous!).

Anyone else had this experience? I also had HORRIBLE dry mouth on the Ditropan - mych worse than with the Tylenol PM.

I have not had dry mouth with Tylenol PM but I have not taken it for years. I have been on Atarax & Elavil since Jan and I started getting eye pain this week. I went to the eye doctor and he said that the meds are drying out my skin. I am using fake tears and it seems to be helping. I did have dry mouth in the beginning of taking these meds but it only lasted about a week.

Hi,

I also get dry mouth from Tylenol PM or Benadryl (same ingredient-the antihistamine). A lot of these medications (antihistamines, some pain meds, meds like Ditropan) have what they call "anticholinergic effects" - the reason they are often used for IC (especially the Ditropan) is because they have the anticholinergic effects, which in English pretty much means that they dry things out a bit - less peeing, but unfortunately, dry eyes and/our mouth. For me, I have especially bad dryness if I take more than one of these meds at a time (i.e. a narcotic plus an antihistamine).

As far as making it better, I wish I could be more helpful - but I don't know what to suggest! I have sometimes used a pill cutter to cut the Tylenol PM in half - less side effects and most of the time it's enough to help me fall asleep.

Ditropan XL is particularly awful for dry mouth. I gave it up because of daytime drowsiness, but I do take regular Ditropan 5mg at night. I keep a bottle of water next to bed (freeze it half full, then fill up remainder before bed--so it's still nice & cold if I wake up in night).

You can get Biotene mouthwash & Biotene gum on the shelf at the drugstore. They're designed for dry mouth problems. I can't use them because I'm allergic to something in it, but I did like it before that problem turned up.

Cetaphil wash is very good for dry skin. I also like the pink moisturizing Dove Bar. For lotion, I use Cetaphil lotion, which is unscented or the Keri extra moisturizing formula.

I've been on Elavil 20mg & Ditropan 5mg at night now for months and the problem isn't as bad now as when first started. Hopefully it will ease up for you also or you'll find little tricks to help you along;)

I appreciate the point about Ditropan XL - that was in fact what I was taking, thus the unbelievable dry mouth. I may try the half-Tylenol trick.

My real fear now that I am off all the drying meds is that my skin is drying out just because I am getting older! :biglaugh: Oh well - we can't be twenty-five forever, and really, who would want to be?

Mary Kay formula one moisturizer is the only one I have found recently that really does the job. Maybe I'll try the Cetaphil and Dove!

I use the Mary Kay formula 1, I also use the night cream ( pink stuff) when I go to bed.

I usually don't have dry mouth from the Tyln. Pm. I usually end up taking the generic walmart brand though.

Regarding your dry skin, I use a combination of Proactive and Olay Regenerist. They are both a little pricy but last a long time b/c you only use a tiny amount. I don't keep up on it like I should. Sometimes it's hard to go through the habit EVERY night but it really helps with my skin and makes it soooo smooth. I would highly recommend it and remember don't be scared by the price and small bottle, you only need to use a little amount. :)
