Okay I feel like I am going backwards. I had a hysterectomy in February. At that time they did the hydrodistention, my GYN did this. He saw my bladder only hold a small amount of fluid (250 or something), then it had the small hemorrhages. He sent me to a Urologist, I went to her today (yes, it really took that long to get in to her). Now she wants to start me on Detrol and I go back on the 28th of June for a cysto. She is going to do this in the office. Is this painful? Why do I feel like I am taking 2 steps back?
Thanks

I know I had one done in office by a uro. It was absolutely painful and horrible. I will never consent to doing one again. Everyone is different so you may be able to handle having it done without being put under. I CANNOT. I would ask them more about that. I don't want to uset you. Everyone is different. What affects one person adversely may be ok for another. That was just my experience. They filled my bladder to normal compacity and it was excrusiating. They were able to see inside that I have wall to wall hunner's ulcers. I don't know. If you have questions call up and ask. It's your body and you should make the decision yourself. I hope it goes well for you. Take care - Chris

Many urologists will want to do an office cysto as a part of the diagnostic process. I find an office cysto is not fun, but not horrible either. I manage to get through it by concentrating on relaxing --- the more relaxed I am, the less pain with the procedure.
Sending warm hugs,

I have had 2 in office cystos and it was uncomfortable but not painful. I too, have a very tiny bladder and a pain patient.. we all are different but I don't think you will have any problems.

Could your GYN send your cysto/hydro report to your URO? I hate to have tests repeated in such a short period of time.

I have only been diagnosed with IC since Jan so I am new to this whole thing but it seems to me that the only true way to have IC diagnosed with a cystoscopy w/ hydrodistension is under general anethestia (spelling?)...What you should do is call your Uro before the prodedure and ask her specific questions about what is being done, why it's being done and what she is looking for. Any good doctor should be more than willing to answer any questions you have and if they are not then they should not be your doctor. Another thing that a lot of doctors do not check IC patients for is Pelvic Floor Dysfunction. My first Uro did not check me for it but my second (and currrent) one did. I do have it and PFD can cause its own pelvic pain, frequency etc and it should be treated as well as the IC. A large percentage of IC patients do have PFD as well. Just a few things to think about and ask your doctor before you see her again!
Good luck!

My experience with the office cysto was horrible as well and I will never have another either. My urethra is small and the dr had to force the scope in. Then because the urethra was small he proceeded to "stretch" my urethra with mini little forceps. He tried to tell me he didnt think I had IC because I was only going once at night and 8-10 times a day wich is high for me though still considered normal. Needless to say I demanded the hydro after finding this site and he saw the tell tale glomulerations. I switched uros after that. I just think that if you just had a hydro/cysto done by your gyb that should be sufficient. Also If he wants to do a cysto tell him you wont do it unless you are under anesthisia. That is just my opinion. Alot of people have no problem with theem but why chance it. I cant even take a catheter anymore without pain killers and I have refused them before as well. YOU take control of your medical care. Also since you are obviously new to this uro ask lots of questions about IC like how many IC patients he sees, how he treats them, what are his ways of handling pain management etc. If you dont like his answers.... switch. My uro told me he had only seen 3 IC patients. I wonder how many others were misdiagnosed... god knows I almost was.
I wonder what they are looking for without the hydro.

There are some things that can be seen with a cysto without anesthesia. And they can measure bladder capacity. I think of it this way: If I go to the doctor for a sore throat or an ear ache, the doctor needs to look at my throat or in my ear to make a diagnosis. It's the same with the bladder --- or even the colon --- just viewing it may not lead to immediate diagnosis, but it does help to rule out some obvious, visible things --- without being subjected to anesthesia.
I was my uro's first IC patient. He had seen it during his residency, however, and was willing to spend some time learning about my IC and how best to treat it. He made my diagnosis in 1975 and is still my uro.

Another thing my dr metnitond to me was that most IC patients have a smaller bladder capacity. Mine is fine and holds well according to him. He felt so strong tht I did not have it that he did not even want to do a regualr cysto and he is suppose to be a specialist in IC. I take it the hydro.cysto must be done in a hospital, not in his office.?Thanks

Mariana,
There are two types of IC. Ulcerative is the one that is typically associated with a smaller bladder capacity. But there is non-ulcerative IC and these patients typically have normal bladder capacity but still have all of the symptoms. I have the non-ulcerative type and was misdiagnosed by three male urologists who blew me off because my bladder size was normal. My current uro - love her - was the one who diagnosed me. I've found the right meds for me and am doing well.

I would never go through another cysto. It was very painful. I asked this urologist if I could be knocked out. His response was by the time I was knocked out, he could be done w/the cysto. So, he tried, felt like a lighter that was lit for hours being shoved in, and he failed. And now he's got one less patient.

I had one cysto done so the doctor could tell me that his orignal thinking was right - I was crazy and there was nothing wrong with me. That was a very painful procedure because I didn't know what it was going to entail, nor did the dr tell me anything about it. When I finally got my insurance to let me see another dr, I had another done that wasn't that painful because he told me everything he was going to do and was very gentle. I think it didn't bother me that much becuase he told me that there was in fact a problem. It felt better to know that I wasn't crazy, that there was something really wrong. Just make sure you tell your dr your concerns about the procedure, and I'm sure they will be happy to explain and calm your worries.

Darlene is correct. If you just had a hydro done in Feb why would they want to do a cysto now. It seems like they are repeating it. Call and get the report of the hydro and give that to the Urologist.
If you have to have a cysto again I would suggest you take something to relax you before going. It really helps.
Ginny
Do you have pain medication, or muscle relaxers? I would take one before I went in, just to relax me some.

Thanks Ladies for all your ideas and support. My Hydro was done on 2/27/04 along with my hysterectomy by my GYN. Then he told me that this female Uro was coming to our Medical Center and so I waited for her to get her. She has all the reports and hydro and urodynamics. She just likes to do "her own testing." That is why I am upset and confused. Obviously with the hydro I have IC (my GYN says) so now she wants to start over. CRAZY.
