Heparin - tolerance

I heard from an IC patient that you can build up a tolerance to Heparin, therefore it eventually stops working. Has anyone heard this? Could it be true?

I did not have this experience with Heparin when I used it as part of an instill.

Interestingly, I recently noticed a warning about both Heparin and Prednisone. Both are risk factors that may increase your chances of getting fractures from osteoporosis. Seizure medicine like phenyton is listed too. I knew this was true for Prednisone but not for Heparin.

My reaction is this: if we live long enough just about anything is a risk factor. Growing old is obviously risky. Gee. . . . what else is new! Right???? I would not let any of this keep me from using a medication that is really helping my bladder.

Dawn i take heparin treatments 1-3x a day. for the pass three-four mths and so far i havent had this to happen i can't say it want but it hasnt yet and i pray it doesnt because heparin has been a life saver for me. wink

I wonder if the Heparin warning is if you take it orally. I forget what it is for as an oral medication but I'm sure that would make a differnce in the last effects. It would have to go through your system. Not that I'm a doctor but just a thought. Maybe just wishful thinking since heparin is working for me.

Heparin is usually given as an injection, but is also used as a bladder instillation. I used it for quite a while, but found that DMSO works better for me. The heparin didn't stop working.

I agree with Liz --- getting old is not for cowards!
