Almost every time I try to have sex, which for me means grin, bear it, and put on an academy award performance, then the urethral spasms start, usually leading to a major infection. I feel sorry for my poor husband.......My doctor mentioned a cream I coud use, plus some antibiotics to take after sex, but he didnt write the rx's after discharge from the hospital. I am at my wits end. Sandy

You might telephone your doctor and say something like, "You mentioned some antibiotics and cream for me to use to help avoid infections from sex, but I forgot to ask you about it before I came home. Could you call them in for me?" ;)

I can relate! I've had chronic UTIs associated with sex for about 10 years. The first 6 months I was diagnosed with IC, I stopped getting them, but in the last year and a half or so, I started getting them again and bad. The last one I had took 2 rounds of antibiotics and I had it for a month.

Because I was having chronic UTIs my uro prescribed macrodantin and I took it everyday for about 7 months. This helped to break the cycle. Now I take an antibiotic (cipro) after sex and this has worked really well. I've only had 1 infection since I started this practice.

Also, I rinse very well after sex. Make sure I urinate before and after. If I'm in pain afterwards, I take percocet. A cool cloth down there also helps.

Make an appt with your uro and talk about this problem or call and ask for the prescriptions. There's meds that can help. The regimen I use has made my quality of life much better. And I don't feel like I need to completely avoid sex any more.

Nicole has some good advice there.

I was in a similar situation although I have finally gotten to the point where I don't need to take Macrobid after I have sex to avoid UTIs, but I am fanatic about washing up before (and urinating before) and rinsing off with plenty of cool water (and urinating after) to reduce the possibility of infection AND soothing any sore/inflamed tissues. If I do not follow these procedures, woe is me the next day for sure! Sometimes I still might have some burning after urinating for a day but it's usually pretty minor.

Donna, that was a very diplomatic way to word the request to her doctor. Lord knows, we don't need to make them mad!

That was a great suggestion,Donna! I always had problems with UTIs after also. One Macrobid after, and of course, running immediately to the bathroom have helped alot!
