I saw my doctor Friday, who has proclaimed himself to be very informed on IC, however he said there was nothing that he can advise for me to deal with the pain. He said it was just a part of the illness that I would have to learn to deal with. I got diagnosed a year ago, but have been "dealing" with the pain for 4+ years. I've read up on previous messages, and have tried many of the suggestions, but I was curious if anyone has any names of medications they have tried to help deal with the pain during and after sex.

my uro prescribed elavil (very small dose) to help with the sensitive nerves "down there." it worked, but it made me very tired. make sure you take it at night. and if you use it, use it every day so it will work properly. i quit using it almost a year ago. but it helped when i needed it.

-although probably not as good as a pain killer. I have never asked for pain meds and luckily have been ok without although some days are hard. I was told I have a moderate case. Everyone responds to pain differently.
Good Luck whatever you end up taking.
Hope your pain gets managable soon.

I take elavil daily and percocet when needed. I take an antibiotic after sex because I get UTIs (which are REALLY painful).
A warm cloth or cold cloth after sex can help the area calm down.
I have to say that if I were you I would find another uro. You shouldn't have to live with the pain. He should be making some effort to help you control it. Are there other uros in your area you could go to? Or ask to be referred to a pain clinic.
Take care,
Nicole

If you are living with pain and your doctor will not prescribe anything to help you, I have to agree that at least getting a second opinion is a good idea.
I don't need pain medication full time, but there are times when I do --- and I'd hate the idea of not having them available when I need them.
Warm healing thoughts,
Donna
I agree, I don't use pain meds full time either. I would hate to not have them when I need them either!

I lived with a doctor who told me that pain medication wouldn't work for my pain for 9 years. I finally found a new doctor who is treating my pain. I take Elavil daily too, but sex is painful. So I take Vicodin as needed for break through pain. I only need to take it when it gets really bad. After sex I can tell if I'm going to need it or not, and take it right away and sometimes I take it before intercourse and that really helps too.
Don't settle for a doctor who tells you to just learn how to deal with it. You deserve a doctor that will help you manange your pain. I can tell you this because I settled for a doctor who didn't help me for 9 years and that was alot of wasted time.
You deserve nothing but the most compassion, especially from a doctor. Don't give up. :)

Unlike many who have responded I take pain meds daily and on a strict schdule (still not enough yet though). Here is what I o to have sex ( I never thought I would be talking about this how IC changes everyhing):
A Valium 2- 5 mg about one hour before (it relaxes me enough but not so much that I feel nothing)
A warm shower, bath or massage first to relax me.
I also make sure it is not vry long, that all night sex is a thing of the past it is to irritating, after I have one orgasim, I tell my hubby to have his turn, it is probebly less wrk for the hubby now, he does not have to prove his stamina because I do not need that now.
We also use lubricants but have not found a perfect one yet.
I always pee after eve if it burns, wash myself with cool to warm water (dependng on prefernce) and keep a am wash cloth onmy vulva, I usuallyslep with a heating pad after too on my bladder or between my legs. The next day I have too pee more and have some irritation if it is sevre I can take proseeds. But I am always in pain anyway so i figure what the heck! Problem though have NO sex drive anymore it just up an flew away a couple of months ago, so now poor hubby.
