I've been going through a flare up the last couple of weeks and came across a site that suggested drinking 1 cup of water with baking soda. It's not a 100% curse or takes away all the pain but it can't take the edge off. It may or may not work for everyone but you could try it out.
You take 1 cup(8oz) of water with either 1/2(half) to 1 whole table spoon of baking soda. (If you take 1/2, don't do more then 4 times a day and if you take 1 full table spoon only do 2 per day!)

Here are a couple links where I got my info
http://www.ehow.com/way_5501795_baking-soda-bladder-infection.html
http://healthyicrecipes.com/quick-pain-relief.html

I hope this will help!

Note from Forum Moderator Kadi: If you have high blood pressure or are on a sodium-restricted diet, check with your doctor before trying this...

I have just started doing this on the advice of my doc! It def does seem to be taking the edge off though I was told to expect a gradual improvement over the course of a month! Thanks for sharing! :)

Baking soda has never really helped me.

Baking soda is my go to solution if food caused the flare up.

It helped me if the flare was just starting and I caught it in time. If I was well in to a full flare it didn't help as much.

Since I started taking it, I have been much better at night time when lying in bed. Hardly getting up to use the toilet at all, but it doesn't seem to make much difference during the day! Go figure!

I usually use 1/2 teas with 4-6 oz distilled water. If that's not enough I can add a little more. I've got it down by taste now. Then I follow with a full 8oz glass of distilled water, (Since distilled water is my only non-flaring drink at the moment) The baking soda works sometimes, sometimes not for me. Kinda like everything else with I.C. It's hit or miss. If at some time it doesn't work, hang it in the closest for a few weeks or months until you think about trying it on again.

I was just diagnosed with IC and I tried the baking soda and water and drank an 8 oz glass of water after. It did seemed to calm the flare down for a bit but it gave me a bad side effect. Basically it gave me explosive diarrhea:( I talked to an ic consultant at my dr office and she said she had never heard of that and asked if I over did it with the baking soda and I told her no I did the recommended dose and only tried it one time. Has anyone else had this side affects? Also when I do the sitz baths or used the baking soda mixed with water to spray it irritated me.
