Hi Kim. TENS stands for trans electrical neuro stimulator. May not be exact but I am sure it is close. I have been using a TENS unit for years. It is not painful at all. All you do is put these sticky pads (electrodes) on your belly or back and turn on the unit. It sends electrical impulses into you to help with the IC symptoms. I think they are great.
I wouldn't worry too much about physical therapy either. I go to it every week and we do various things. I have a biofeedback machine that I use to help the pelvic floor muscles, and I also have learned how completely relax my bladder. I think that physical therapy is very informative. It has helped me understand how different muscles work in relation to IC.
I also get mini massages. I use to have an interstim unit implanted and they stretch the scar tissue in my back. I really wish they would just continue on and do my whole back but I haven't talked them into that yet. Ha ha.
I think once you get your first visit under your belt you will realize that there is nothing to worry about.
If you have any questions I would be happy to help.
