Not exactly sure where to post this since I don't see an area for nursing moms...

I asked my obgyn if I could take Elmiron (which I used to take before pregnancy) for my Interstitial Cystitis while nursing and she said absolutely not. :( She also said there are no other similar drugs I could take either. I am a little confused at why I can't take it while breastfeeding, if it can be taken during pregnancy. Has anyone nursed with Interstitial Cystitis or while on Elmiron?

that is a puzzler, but I assume it has to do with how the drug reacts within the body - it may not cross the placenta b/c the drug molecules are large and pregnancy is safe, but it may be a different story within the production of breast milk/nursing..I would definitely ask though - In Canada, we have a place called Motherisk, which is at the Toronto Hospital for Sick Kids, and they deal with these type of questions for pregnant women/new moms, you should see if your area has something similar you could contact for more info if your doc doesn't have any.
I was allowed to stay on Elavil and nurse while taking it for both my pregnancies, and I've just stayed on it since b/c I don't want to disrupt the way I feel just to switch to another med - the only thing is that your doc knows what's best for you, although you are always entitled/encouraged for a 2nd opinion if you feel it warrants one :)
Good luck!
