I am scheduled for the 15th for the cysto/hydro and am kinda nervous about the pain afterward. I go in next week for my pre-op blood work and information. I know that I have a bad reaction to anything with codine in it, so what would be my alternatives? Any suggestions? How has this procedure affected others?
Oh yea, today I finally got the nerve to ask for more pain meds. The once a day vioxx wasn't cutting it. I started taking two a day and no relief. I know that it's a no-no, but I took a muscle relaxer (flexeril) from my hubbie's meds last night so that I might be able to sleep AND IT WORKED! I only got up once last night. So my dr called me in a script today. I am so relieved. I finally might be able to relax at night and sleep.
Best to everyone.

Best wishes Jen,
I will be thinking of you and keep you in my prayers. It is hard to say what pain meds will work for you but you can discuss that with the doctor before hand. Be sure to let them know what effects you have from which meds. Hoping your new script works for you and you can get some rest. When I had my cysto/hydro done I had some miminal discomfort for a few days. I also had a lapo done @ same time so my recovery time was a little longer. I just took it easy for awhile and tried to relax as much as possible. Used my heating pad, drank lots of water and rested.

One thing I have done when I am having a procedure that will make the rest of the day harder than normal is stay up all or most of that night (doing what I need to do...pray and such) so that I can sleep through most of that day easily. If that isn't a choice for you....sorry.
Other than that ....they often make you somewhat worse than normal the first day after you had it.
I hope others have some great advise for you.
Be sure to ask for pain meds if your doc doesn't offer them

Hi Jen,
Just want to wish you good luck with your procedure. If you can, try to discuss options for post-op pain control with your doctor before the actual surgery. Other than that, just relax as much as you can... I would plan to take it easy for a few days after the procedure, too, to give yourself time to heal.

I will be thinking of you, and if you have any questions, feel free to PM me...

When you do the pre-op visit, you will very likely be asked if you have any allergies --- you can tell them about your reaction to codeine then. There are many, many pain medications available that don't have codeine so that shouldn't be a problem. Just be sure your doctor knows when he's writing orders for after discharge from the hospital.
I do suggest you plan to take it easy for a few days to give yourself time to heal.
I hope you find the hydro helps your symptoms.
Warm hugs,
Donna

I am allergic to codeine, as well. They did ask if I was allergic to anythng. I do not remember the name of the pain med they gave me.
I was one of the fortunate ones who was not in much pain after the procedure. I did have a burning when I urineated the first few times that afternoon. I did rest for the remainder of the day afterwards but was able to be up and about the next day.
Try to relax and not worry too much. Yeah, like I am the expert about that one. I was a nervous wreck at the hospital and made a spectacle of myself. :D Oh well..:D
I do hope that it goes well for you. Let us know.

I made a spectacle of myself too.... kept whining and asking my hubby loudly, "But what if I never wake up???" and other things like that. Oopsie. Well, I'd never had general anesthesia before! ;)
Sharon, I wonder if we can locate that thread we had were we discussed our respective spectacles? :D

THANK YOU ALL so much for the prayers and encouragement. I have my pre-op appt. scheduled next week and I will definitely bring up pain meds for after the surgery. I really appreciate the input and advice from everyone. I hope my nerves will be strong. One thing that is really bothering me though, the information that came with my surgery time listed meds that I can't take up to a WEEK before the procedure said no anti-inflamatory meds! Are they crazy? Doesn't that include the vioxx and pyridium plus? I'm callin' on Monday to find out.
Best to you all,
Jen:hi:

Jen,
My first cysto w/ hydro was done in Jan of this year and I too
was petrified! My recovery was about 3-4 days and I had severe
bleeding in my bladder so I couldn't be hydrodistended as much as the uro had hoped. I requested not to have a catheter put in
after the procedure due to a bad cysto done in '02 which left me traumatized about catheter's. The uro was ok about that but she warned me that I was going to have bleeding for a few days, and that if it didn't stop within 48-72 hrs I was to return to the hospital asap. When I woke up after the surgery, I felt no pain!
I was so relieved and thankful for the belladonna suppositiory!
I did have alot of bleeding, and when I got home I began to pass blood clots. I must have drank 2-3 liters of water that night when I got home because I was so fearful of passing those clots. But the bleeding did slow down, and I was back to my
self on about the 4th day.
Now, my case is much different from yours, so I'm sure you'll do just fine.
Just remember to ask for pain meds post surgery so you don't have to suffer.
All the best!

I woke up from my first Cysto/Hydro with no pain. I didn't even get a prescription for pain medications. I'm scheduled for another on the 18th, so we'll see.
Rest, Relax, Breathe.......

Hi Jen,
I'm right behind you for my first cysto/hyrdro scheduled on June 28th. I hope everything goes well for you. I'm also very nervous about this test and have "Catheter Anxiety". I'm going to ask my doctor about the LoFric catheter or using a pediatric size catherter. I was in a lot of pain after the urodynamics test.
Recently I received a long list of medication and supplements not to take a week before surgery. It did include Vioxx. It also includes vitamin E. Anything that thins the blood is on the list; most of the stuff I never heard of. I
I take other things that are not on the list and wanted to know if any of you know if these things would be harmful. Pepcid AC,
Glucosomine, Condriotin (sp?) and MSM, Vitamin A, Vitamin B-50 complex. My doctor is out of town and his staff told me to call the pharamacy to ask, but if someone knows here, or if there is a list somewhere on the IC Network site, please let me know.

Classics....
My list of meds not to take include a multivitamin, so I probably wouldn't take the B-complex.?? I'm not sure about the others. Calling your local pharmacist is a great idea. They should know if the meds are thinning agents or anti-inflamitory. No asparin containing products AND no anti-inflamatories....seems crazy to anyone with IC!!! I have to stop my Vioxx and pyriduim today! YIKES! I am still taking my muscle relaxer to keep me from being so edgy from the pain. At least it isn't on the list.
Thanks to everyone wishing me well. I really appreciate you taking the time to reply to my post. I think that I am ok about the procedure now. Coming to terms with having IC and the necessary meds/procedures/diet/dr visits has taken me some time to get used to.

Jen, how are you feeling? Did the procedure go well?
