Sometimes you find things out by accident.
I was diagnosed with IC 1/2/08 and was put on Hydroxysine 50mg nightly very soon after. I have enjoyed long remission periods and mostly mild IC symptoms since I started medication, but over the last few months my IC has been sneaking back and bothering me a bunch.
On an unrelated note I have been working with my doctor to come off Cymbalta. After I stopped taking Cymbalta my IC symptoms stopped. I started thinking that the Cymbalta was the thing making my IC worse unless yesterday when my IC started bothering me again.
I started wondering what was going on and then it dawned on me that I had been taking Promethazine (phenergan) for nausea since quitting the Cymbalta (because Cymbalta withdraw sucks). I took a 12.5mg phenergan pill and very soon after my IC was fine (and I could hold my pee for hours!!!!!)
My IC doctor told me that antihistamines (which Phenergan and Hydroxysine are) don’t work forever and sometimes you have to change them up. Hopefully I can continue taking Phenergan and hopefully the IC symptoms will continue to stay dormant.
I just thought I would share my findings because I know a lot of IC folks are taking antihistamines for IC. Also, my IC doctor is a recognized IC doctor in the Austin area.
