View Full Version : Bladder Retention???

Hi everyone...I'm writing because I was just wondering how common this is. I've been to about 8 urologists and they all did all the testing and said I had no retention. Then when I was in the hospital this last time I had this "full" feeling all the time so my PCP ordered a bladder scan. The first one was horrible. I had to chug a bunch of water and afterwards I was in so much pain I could hardly lie still while they did the ultrasound. Then I had to go use the restroom and come back to have it scanned to see if I had anything left. Well when I tried to go to the bathroom I knew I didn't empty all the way because I was so uncomfortable after the large amount of liquids and it hurt so bad to pee. So of course the results of that test were that I had around 250cc left.

So the next day I explained to my doctor what happened so he ordered portable bladder scans that day 4 times. After I used the restroom I would call the nurse in and she would do the bladder scan to see how much was left. And I still had a pretty high quantity. The first 3 were in the 140s 160s. Then the 4th was only 86. So now i'm confused. I'm going to call my urologist tomorrow to see what he thinks but I was just wondering if any of you have experienced this. Thanks!!

What kind of tests did the Uro's do to show that you had no retention?

It could even be some of the meds you are taking. I see you take elavil, this can cause retention, as can any type of pain medication. Not sure if this is your issue or not. what did the doctor at the hospital say?? Why were you in the hospital, was it because you could not pee?

I think my other uro's just had me not use the restroom before i came then scanned it then and then again after I went. This was probably a year ago. I was in for pain and dehydration. It hurt so bad to pee I had kind of stopped drinking and was throwing up from the pain. I called my uro when I got out and asked if he needed to see me but he said no. So I guess they aren't too worried about it???? Who know. I've just never had this problem before.

Hi, Erica ~ I know that horrible feeling of not being able to go! One question, though. While you were in the hospital, were you on an IV? The last time I had surgery, I couldn't "go" at all afterwards. They finally cathed me and got 600cc's! Needless to say, I was in quite a bit of pain. Then I left the hospital and went directly across the street to my Uro/Gyn for an instill so I could get home and they cathed another 600cc's. So, the IV definitely made a difference...painfully so.

Since I always have shown a Post Residual my doc's rule of thumb is that as long as I'm going "more" or about the "same" as the residual, I needn't worry. My residual is usually around 100cc's.

I hope your doctor can get some good answers for you and get rid of that horrible "full" feeling after you've just gone. Take care.

Thanks Ginger! I was on an IV in the hospital.....you're right that's probably why I felt so full the whole time. When they did the scans in my room they did 3 and I think the most i retained was around 165ccs. My uro lives 2 1/2 hours away so I didn't want to make a trip unless I had to. My primary care physician takes care of about all my issues unless there is something he thinks I need to see my uro for. I live in wheeling, wv so we have 1 urologist who treats IC and he was a complete jerk so now I'm stuck driving when i need to see one. Anyways thanks for all the replies. I hope everyone had a good Christmas!!!!

Not to mention the IV could have had potassium in it which hurts the bladder, making it harder on you..

Never even thought of the potassium thing...Im pretty sure it is in my IV bags. I know I need to get rehydrated when I get in a really bad flare but maybe they have something else they could use

Speaking of potassium, My uro wants to do the PST test. I didn't think they did those anymore, do they?
