I had not told one of my brothers that I have IC. He has asked me at times "whats wrong?" but I would just say Im tired. But this weekend I did explain after he asked more questions.
He and his wife were especially intristed because they have been taking their toddler to the Dr. several times. They said she lets them know it hurts when she goes pee pee. The Drs. never find infection.
My brother and his wife are very eager to know if she could have what I have. I didn't know the answer. Can a child that young have IC? Does anyone know the answer? I told them I would ask around.

There is a boy named J.T. ____ that lives in the U.S. who was diagnosed when he was 2 years old. It was very, very hard to get a diagnosis because he was so little and it was difficult for him to explain his symptoms.
J.T. is 10 now I believe and of course, still has IC. He speaks to Congress about his illness in the hopes of more research to be undertaken. He is given pain medication and I think he takes Elmiron as well as other medications - not too sure which ones.
I have read that it is very rare in children however, but not entirely unheard of. Every avenue will have to be explored with this child as of course, Interstitial Cystitis is a diagnosis of exclusion. Hope that helps. xo

There is a lady who comes on here and her little girl is in school now, but, I'd guess she was dx'ed at least around 4.
I sure hope the little toddler in your family doesn't have it. Prayers going out for relief for that little one.

Yes, it's possible for a young child to have IC. As others have said, it is unusual, but definitely possible.
I think it would be a good idea to take their little one to a urologist who sees pediatric patients for evaluation.
Some other things to think about:
Bubble bath and other products to put in a bath tub to bathe children can be irritating. Underwear can be a problem too, if it's not all cotton.
They might try eliminating acid foods and drinks for while to see if that helps.
I hope they find some answers soon --- and I hope it's not IC.
Warm hugs,
Donna

Thanks Donna, I will be sure to ask my sister-in-law about the undies and the baths. I did talk to her about paying attention to the diet, as far as noticing if it gets worse. She was blending a strawberry smoothoe for my niece during our last conversation. Which seems to be common practice. I even wonder if she could be sensitive to the acidity, even if its not IC?

Yes, it's possible to have foods irritate a bladder without its being IC. I have a friend who hasn't been able to drink coffee throughout her adult life without bladder irritation --- and she has never had any problems with any other foods or drink --- and the only time she ever had symptoms was with drinking coffee.

I was wondering also if this tot is old enought to ride a bicycle? I know when I was a child my bicycle seat used to bother me (I didn't know what it was then) and what was happening was it was really irritating my urethra because of the angle of the seat and it was really hard and then it would "hurt when I peed". Just another think to check for...
