A study caught my eye last week. Researchers at Ohio State University were conducting a study on the consumption of fish oil in reducing inflammation and they made a surprising discovery. Omega 3 supplementation also helped reduce anxiety disorder. The students receiving the omega-3 showed a 20 percent reduction in anxiety compared to the placebo group.
But what makes this study riveting are the blood test results which ALSO showed a decrease in inflammatory markers. Ron Glaser, professor of molecular virology, immunology & medical genetics and director of the Institute for Behavioral Medicine Research, said "We took measurements of the cytokines in the blood serum, as well as measured the productivity of cells that produced two important cytokines, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα)." He continued "We saw a 14 percent reduction in the amounts of IL-6 among the students receiving the omega-3." Since the cytokines foster inflammation, "anything we can do to reduce cytokines is a big plus in dealing with the overall health of people at risk for many diseases." he said.
Inflammation is a natural immune response that helps the body heal, but it also can play a harmful role in a host of diseases ranging from arthritis to heart disease to cancer. While the researchers aren't ready to recommend a broad use of fish oil, due to both cost and declining fish supplies, they do suggest increasing omega-3 consumption through their diet.
So what foods are high in Omega-3? Salmon, flax seeds and walnuts have the highest quantity and are the most easily accessible foods. Scallops, cauliflower, cabbage, cloves and mustard seeds to a lesser extent yet both the cloves and the mustard could be irritating to some IC bladders. Halibut, shrimp, cod, tuna, soybeans, tofu, kale, collard greens, and brussels sprouts are also options.
Flax seed oil and cod liver oil are the most popular supplements, perfect for an iC'er as well. I actually prefer these because I'm not a big seafood fan. Gas producing foods like cauliflower, cabbage and brussel sprouts are my enemy. I recommend Natrol's Omega-3 fish oil & Spectrum Essentials Flax Seed Oil Capsules http://www.icnsales.com/?cat=144. Please remember that these oils are highly sensitive to damage from heat, light and oxygen. Choose a certified organic product that is packaged in a dark brown or green glass jar and be sure to store the product in your refrigerator or freezer.
