Are Hydro's & DMSO's the same thing? I thought yesterday I was suppose to get a cysto/hydro but my papers say I got a cysto & DMSO & I go to my uro weekly for 6 weeks followed with 1 every month for DMSO'S. I guess my brain isn't fully functioning yet or something. eek

A hydrodistention is done in a hospital with anesthesia. You can read more about it in the Patient Handbook at http://www.ic-network.com./handbook/

DMSO is a bladder instillation and is usually done in the doctor's office. They put the medication directly into the bladder through a catheter.

MsSmiley,

Perhaps your uro was like mine. I had my cysto/hydro done under anesthesia last Thursday. After my uro was done with the cysto/hydro part (which confirmed what he thought he'd find...namely, that I have IC), he performed my first DMSO instillation while I was still under anesthesia. He told me beforehand that this what what he was planning and I agreed to it. I realize the ICA (http://www.ichelp.com) says this should NOT be done, but (a) I didn't have a bladder biopsy and (b) I've really suffered no adverse effects other than waking up in recovery reeking like garlic :D

I even slept the whole night last night without getting up to pee!

Anyway, I have my first in-office DMSO this Wednesday, so I'm wondering how much it will hurt when I'm NOT under general anesthesia.

Take care,
Jen

Maybe you had BOTH procedures done like this in the OR?? :)
