After no sucess with the hydrodistension, I think that my uro will probably want to try some instillations next. I am wondering what peoples experience with heparin and marcaine is as opposed to DMSO. I have a very public job and really don't want to have the DMSO funk about me for days. Any comments are appreciated.

Everyone reacts differently, but I haven't had the bad smell with any of my DMSO's. But, I do know that many people do, so I guess I am one of the lucky ones. I know this probably didn't help much, sorry! I wish you the best of luck with whatever you decide to try.

When I did DMSO, I was stinky for about a day. My husband insisted that it didn't smell too bad -- he insists that it smelled more like cooked corn with a little hint of garlic than anything else. He even said he LIKED the smell and wanted to eat corn for dinner as a result, but he can be weird :)
Also I don't think it lasted that long... I think I really smelled awful immediately after the treatment, but the curve of stinkiness vs. time had a steep slope in my body and it seemed to go away fast. I would come to work in the afternoon after my treatment sometimes (if it was a morning one... if it was in the afternoon I'd just go home).
The first time I came to work after one, I made all of my lab mates promise to be totally honest and tell me how bad I reeked. Hilarity ensued as they proceeded to step closer and closer, sniffing all the while. They insisted it was "WAY less disgusting" than I'd led them to believe it would be the day before, and many said that I had to breathe directly on them for them to notice.
Now, I could taste the DMSO in my mouth, and my husband said the house smelled like it a little, so it's not like there was NO odor at all. But I didn't feel uncomfortable being out and about with it after the first few hours...
Everyone's body chemistry and kinetics of drug metabolism are different though...

I take heparin and marcaine daily at home and its helped me alot!!
i have no pain after words because the marcaine numbs my bladder and the heparin helped heal my bladder I had over 90 spots on my bladder last year now i have none. if you would like to see the picture of my bladder now please pm me with your email address.
i'm very pleased with heparin and marcaine
it also doesnt leave a smell behind, but everyone is diff.
Dear jen,
You obviously have a great relationship with your coworkers...I don't think I'll try that experiment with my high school students! LOL.

:) Yeah, my coworkers and I have a good relationship... we're all about the same age, and we're all early-career biologists (and some also have MD's), so at this point, not much disgusts any of us. We also are pretty close because unfortunately, none of us really likes the boss, so we have to put up a unified front ;)
The guy I share a cubicle with is an MD, a 4th year resident... his response to me apologizing for any DMSO stench in our cube was, "Listen, before 9am this morning I'd already been thrown up on by 3 different kids... a little garlic odor is trivial at this point." ;)
I guess I have a special situation though... it makes working with IC a LOT easier. I am SO grateful for that!

Steve, I've never done the dmso, but am currently doing the heparin, marcaine & lidocaine rinses. I had to do them twice a week for 3 weeks, then once a week for 6 weeks. Just had my 10th one yesterday.I think with dmso's they don't have as many treatments. But on the other hand from what I've read the dmso's may have more discomfort at least on the day you get them. My biggest discomfort is getting cathed. It can flare me for a few hours, but not every time. Part of it, for me anyway, depends on which nurse caths me and how skilled she is at it:rolleyes: I think they are helping, as I've been feeling better, although not as good as I'd hoped. Good luck to you! Grace

I have had both heparin and DMSO instillations. The heparin did help, but the DMSO helps me more than the heparin. Some people are just the opposite.
If I had it to do again, I would still do the heparin first --- it's not painful and works extremely well for some people.
Warm healing thoughts,
Donna
