With research released year that suggested that low levels of Vitamin D could contribute to pelvic floor disorders, this article is indeed relevant to us! Are you getting enough Vitamin D? Luckily, Vitamin D is IC friendly though I can't promise you can stomach some of the foods it's found in. Cod liver oil?? Not my favorite! - Jill

Healthy Sources of Vitamin D

Newswise — HOUSTON – The recent increase in recommended vitamin D intake from the Food and Nutrition Board may prompt some to seek more summer sun. But, experts at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center say there’s no safe amount of time people can stay in the sun without increasing skin cancer risks.

People tend to think of sunshine when they think of vitamin D — and for good reason. When UV rays come in contact with the skin, it triggers the creation of vitamin D.

“Some people may absorb enough vitamin D from their routine outdoor exposure,” says Susan Y. Chon, M.D., assistant professor in MD Anderson’s Department of Dermatology. “However, the benefits of UV exposure may be limited because they can lead to increased risks of developing skin cancer.” On a hot summer day, unprotected skin can be damaged in as little as 15 minutes.

Add vitamin D to your diet

So, why is vitamin D so important? It’s the main building block for maintaining bone health. Without it, you can develop thin and brittle bones. Vitamin D also boosts the immune system to help fight off germs, bacteria and diseases, including certain cancers.

To avoid skin cancer, Chon recommends getting the daily fill of vitamin D from foods and, if necessary, supplements.

A handful of foods provide a large serving of this vitamin, including:
• Cod liver oil: According to the National Institutes of Health, this fish extract provides the largest amount of vitamin D — just one tablespoon offers 1,360 IUs (International Units).
• Fish: One serving (about three ounces) of certain types of fish also can give you a healthy dose of vitamin D. This includes:
o Salmon: Provides 447 IUs per serving
o Mackerel: Provides 388 IUs per serving
o Tuna: Provides 154 IUs per serving
• Milk: Milk really does a body good. Just one cup of whole, reduced fat or non-fat milk is fortified with vitamin D and provides 115 – 124 IUs.
• Fortified cereals: Ready-to-eat cereals, fortified with 10 percent of the daily recommendation for vitamin D, are an easy way sneak in extra nutrients. A three-quarter to one cup serving can provide at least 40 IUs.
Vitamin D needs aren’t one-size-fits-all

The amount of vitamin D the body needs depends mostly on age. Below are the daily recommended allowances from the Food and Nutrition Board.
• Birth to 12 months: 400 IUs
• Age 1 to 70: 600 IUs
• Age 70 and older: 800 IUs

Most people can get their daily fill of vitamin D by drinking a cup of milk and eating a three-ounce serving of salmon.

“There’s no doubt that vitamin D is vital when it comes to healthy bones and preventing diseases like cancer,” Chon says. “But, there’s no need to sacrifice sun safety (like skipping sunscreen or spending countless hours soaking in the rays) to get your fill.”

Husband Terry and I both were deficient in D --- so we're taking physician ordered 2000 units every day.

I had my dr. test my D3 levels six years ago because I was showing bone loss. I live in a sunshine state and am outside a huge amount of time, and I still showed as deficient in D3. So much for the sun theory of adding D3 to our bodies. I've been taking 2200U of D3 for years now.

I'm deficient in Vit. D as well. The first time I had blood work this year my numbers were low.. about 9. I was prescribed 50,000 iu's 1 tab a week for three months... Went back to check levels they were still low. This time I recieved a shot of 45,000 iu's.. I was given a script for pills 50.000 iu's 2 times a week. and one a day over the counter pills. I go back in 3 months to check levels again. I hope they are with in proper range this time.

Thanks for info

When I had my yearly physical the doctor order lab work for the usual plus Vit D due to bone loss. I am low, taking Vit D tablets. Going back to the lab later this week or early next to get rechecked.

Good post, thanks

I just recently had a complete blood work done and the doctor told me that i was very low on Vitamin D.
He recommended that I take 1000 iu every day.

But I'm scared to try it because I don't want an IC flare. I know that we can't take Vitamin C.

Thanks

I was just diagnosed with beyond extremely low VITAMIN D so I will be taking a weekly prescription supplement and then after this runs its course I will need to take 4000 IUs per day.

I live in sunny Perth in Australia. Always sun around! I also eat a lot of seafood... So it can't be the main cause :(

I just went to see my endocrinologist and apparently my VITAMIN D levels are BEYOND low. I think this is excellent info and will try to get it naturally but will take supplements to make sure my levels are good!!

Maybe I should get tested anyway... I would be shocked if I was low. If I was low it would be a blessing, atleast I could treat it and improve my symptoms!
