I read this on the DMSO site, "Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), an industrial solvent which was originally a byproduct of the paper pulp manufacturing process, was first used medicinally in 1964. Its properties when applied to the human skin were noted to include diuresis, local analgesia, anti-inflammation, and vasodilatation. 17 Originally used (with little success) over the surprapubic area in the treatment of interstitial cystitis,18 it was not until 1968 that it was applied intravesically with good results. 9

I get DMSO once in awhile but have cut it back due to the hurting reactions the first week of the treatment. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it does not but a "byproduct of the paper pulp manufacturing process?" In my precious body? It's making me wonder now. My last DMSO was 8 months ago.

Yeah, it is a pretty disgusting concept.

DMSO is also used during cryopreservation of cells -- both in the laboratory and in the clinic. For example, cells to be used in bone marrow transplants are preserved in a mixture of growth media and DMSO and then can be frozen in liquid nitrogen until the date of the transplant. DMSO preserves the cells during freezing by inhibiting ice crystal formation in them... this way, many many more cells survive the freezing process than if DMSO was not used.

So, people who've gotten marrow often have the same garlicky stench as IC patients who've just had an instill....

I take the Heparin and Marcaine cocktail Have you tried it?
the heparin heals my bladder while the marcaine numbs it.
its great when i'm flareing and don't have a UTI.
I really didnt know how much it helped me until May 19 when i had my surgery for my hunners to be removed and he also checked my bladder and removed scar tissue that uti has left on my bladder i now have something called cystitis glandularis. I know great now i have something else to worry about and learn about.
but my point is a year ago i have over 90 pin point bleeding spots on my bladder now i have none.
i don't know how or if the are really related or not the dmso and cocktails but i'm so glad i tried them the cocktail dmso hurt my bladder so I couldnt stand them. and call me dumb i know i am LOL but there for a while i didn't know that the treatment i was taking was a cocktail i thought it was a dmso. I know alot of people was woudering why i was calling heaprin and marcaine a dmso but i didn't know. Glad I do now.

Yes, I have to agree that the origins of some medications is pretty yucky --- for example, penicillin is made from mold --- which to me is pretty disgusting, but we don't think anything at all of using it for infection.

Lots of medications were discovered "by accident" --- but that doesn't make them less effective. I am on a monthly DMSO schedule and plan to continue as long as it helps.

Sending a gentle hug,
Donna
