I don't know if these explanations are better than what you've already read, but here are some I found:
Question:
My doctor told me that I have squamous metaplasia and cystitis glandularis. Can you tell me what these are?
Peggy / Georgia
Answer:
Squamous metaplasia and cystitis glandularis are medical terms for certain noncancerous (benign) changes in the lining of the bladder. These changes don't represent a specific disease. They may be found incidentally on cystoscopy done for some other reason. Cystoscopy is a procedure in which your doctor inserts a long, narrow, lighted tube (cystoscope) through your urethra into your bladder.
A thin layer of protective tissue (transitional epithelium) lines the bladder. Squamous metaplasia refers to a normal process in which transitional cells convert to more skin-like (squamous) cells. Cystitis glandularis describes another type of change in the bladder lining. These changes may occur as the result of many conditions such as:
*Chronic irritation such as from a bladder stone or urinary catheter
*Chronic urinary tract infection involving the bladder (cystitis)
*Hormonal changes in women
*Allergies
If a cause can be identified, treatment is directed at the underlying problem. In some cases, the cause of these changes can't be determined.

118: I'm helping my sister who is 51 years old find information for us to understand better what is going on with her. Her doctor is just as puzzled as we are, and I'm trying to search everything and anything to help find out what is going on with my sister. Here's what we know so far, From 1982 to now she has has large amount of microscopic hematuria in her urine, Bladder Polyps as well which are removed each year. This past July they began to block the neck of the bladder. She's been told she also has Chronic Cystitis Glandularis, This past July the report showed Atypical Transitional Cells Pathologist recommended tissue studies. Study showed neg. Now they will do a Urine Cytology in 6 months. Her doctor is puzzle as to what is going on, her blood count drops which they think is due to the large amount of Microscopic Hematuria in the urine. If you can lead me to where I can research information or anything that will help us solve this puzzle would be more then greatly appreciate. God Bless and Thank you for all your time and help.
A: It appears that your sister has benign inflammation of the bladder as a cause of the microscopic blood in the urine. This evaluation is very important and needs to be complete. Be sure to encourage her to continue seeing her doctor. For an excellent discussion on hematuria be sure to point your browser to www.urologychannel.com. This topic is listed on the home page. thanks kim for your information i'm taking notes i'm going to get to the bottom of this here i was thinking i was doing so much better because i don't have any more pin point bleeding on my bladder then i learn this i understand my bladder has a mind of its on but dang. ggggggrrrrrrrrrrr.
i also found out more then likely i will have to have the same three hunners removed again if i'm lucky it might wait two years but most likely they will be back within a year because my bladder (the cells in my bladder) is feeding these ulcers. :(
Please if any of you have ever had this explain to me what did you do to take care of it or what are you doing to treat it i havent got to see my doctor since surgery but its only been few days now. i have learned this by what he put on the papers that was sent home and what was writen on my picture from my bladder.
