Hi, I'm assuming you are having an in-office cystoscopy and not a cystoscopy with hydrodistention which you'd have at the hospital. If so, I just had one about 3 weeks ago for the first time. I was so nervous I put it off for 6 months and before that I put off going to a uro for literally years! Now that I've had it done I think that was pretty silly of me. With my uro, they put a catheter in, slowly filled my bladder with sterile water, my uro was asking me the whole time how my bladder felt, did I feel like I had to go, how strong was the urge etc. I think they put in about 450cc all the while using the camera to look at my bladder. It showed up on a screen by the bed that I could watch which I liked as it was kinda cool to see and it was a welcome distraction. Then they emptied the water back out, looked for signs of bleeding etc. Then they did it again and the 2nd time they had me pee it out. That was it. I think the whole thing took about 10 minutes.
Afterwards I had a little frequency from the catheter so I took an azo with me and took it as soon as I got in the car. I drank lots of water at home and by the time it wore off I felt fine. They also gave me a macrobid (antibiotic) to take.
Hope your appointment goes well and it is not a big deal for you as well! People have different experiences but mine was positive and I wanted to share it with you.

The cystoscopy that I had in office, actually I had two of them, were a bit different. My uro inserted the small camera (on the end of a tube about the size of a catheter) and then used some water to 'inflate' my bladder and then just looked all around at my bladder, he checked to make sure that my ureters were functioning properly, which was pretty cool to see. The first one was not good, I was terrified and he didn't take much time with me. The second one was much better as I was calmer and I had told my Dr that I was nervous so he took more care. (different Dr) Be sure to let your Dr know that you are nervous, that should help a lot.
Good luck to you,

Did they mention hydrodistention? If you will be having a cystoscopy with hydrodistention, the bladder will be stretched while you are asleep. If you click on the patient information link in my signature below, it will lead you to information about this procedure.
Some ICers are actually helped by hydrodistention (I am!), but it does take a little time to recover and you may have some pain afterwards.
If you don't know if you will be having a hydro, I suggest you telephone the doctor's office and ask --- it's always easier if you know what's going to be done.
