Our central A/C is acting up (not getting cold), and of course, yesterday was Sunday so no repairmen could come out. But, also of course, it was like 85 degrees out... we needed something!

So hubby and I dusted off the ceiling fans so we could use those to cool the house off a bit. Well, Paddington, our 1-year old Maine Coon cat, has never seen a fan actually turning... we got him last fall, after the bulk of the heat was over, so the fans have never been run in his presence (plus usually we just put the AC on because it's so darn humid in Memphis).

Well, hubby turned the fan on, and at that moment, Paddington came wandering around the corner into the bedroom... he looked up and saw the fan running, got this wild look in his eyes, backed up a few steps, and took off as fast as he could down the hall, into the living room, and behind the couch.

THEN, eventually he came out, and we were in the kitchen...hubby pointed at the fan in there, and reached up and gently pushed the blades around without even turning the fan on. Paddington took off again!!!

And this morning, I heard him meowing really loudly in the kitchen, so I looked in there... he was sitting on the floor beneath the fan, looking at it, and screaming at it, as if to say, "Get the *&^% out of my house, you crazy creature!" And then he took off again. It wasn't even on this time!

What a crazy kitty!!!!! :)

I guess if we just leave the fans on he'd get used to it eventually... what do you think??

Don't worry kitty will adjust...I had 2 cats who were like that....the ceiling fans went on and *poof!* they wouldn't walk in the center of the room, they'd only walk the outer perimeter. Almost if htey thought it would detach from the ceiling and behead them ::::shakes head::::: Poor lambs! But they finally adjusted.....they still HATE the vacuum cleaner tho! :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Jen,
That's too funny! Makes you wonder what is going through their minds.....:dizzy:
I hope Paddington gets used to it today.
We just had to replace our unit and had went w/o anything but ceiling fans from Ap. til a couple weekends ago...but Memphis is more humid than the Knoxville area. (We need the little gramelin with the sunglasses. He has disappeared!);)

Animals really crack me up! I love your story, Jen! I have a 90 pound yellow lab who is scared to death to go out the kitchen door into the garage. He will not let you put him out there through that kitchen door for nothing & that's even where he gets fed. I have to let him out the back door to the deck & then walk to the back garage door & open it for him. Then he will go into the garage & eat. And get this, when he's done, he comes in through the kitchen door without any hesitation. He'll come in it but won't go out it. He's such a goofball! He's also scared of the vaccum & hair dryer.

Oh yes, my cat is scared of the vacuum cleaner as well, runs like crazy and hides. He is used to the ceiling fans, and loves to lie under the big one in the living room, even with the air conditioning going, I call him crazy cat, but I love him to pieces, Iris.:)

:)

I am happy to report that, after a few days of running the ceiling fans, Paddington is doing better with them... he doesn't take off, but he does what Yvette's do... he won't go through the center of the room when it is on. Instead, he stalks around the perimeter, and occasionally meows at me to voice his displeasure. ;)

But at least, he will be in the same room with it now...
