View Full Version : Total ceral
I don't usually eat this ceral, but since they claim that it has all the vitiams and nutrients you need, I was thinking it might be a good one to try to have each day.
I'm just wondering if it has caused a flare for anyone?
Also, what types of ceral do you eat?
Right now, I'm sticking with Cheerios and Rice Crispes, because I know they are ok for me.

hi...cereal is one of my favorite foods I could eat it any time of day. At the time I am doing the elimanation diet and have found grape-nuts to be safe for me. I too am interested to know what else others have found to be friendly.
I love this site, I'd be so lost and alone without it!

Total with a little honey drizzled over the top, add blue berries and milk...Yum. It's one of my favorites! And, no problem with pain or other symtoms. This is the only way I will drink milk so I really hope the vitamin claim is true. :)
Hi, I found out that Honey Nut Cheerios, is O.K. for me, and I love them. I also could also eat cereal any time of day. Iris. :) hat

I can eat many types of cereals without a problem, which is a good thing because I love them as well. Sometimes, when I'm tired, I eat it for dinner :) I've been eating Cheerios lately.
As for Total, I'm a biochemist and I'm not sure that you really get all the nutrition they say you do from it... they can CLAIM they have that much of each vitamin/mineral in there because they do put huge amounts in. HOWEVER, if you look at the ingredients list as a biologist, you see that most of the vitamins added are in forms that are poorly absorbable by the human body. For example, the vitamin E they add to most foods, including Total, is a racemic mix of the D and L forms of tocopherol (vitamin E)... but your body can only use the D form, meaning you really only get half the vitamin E you think you're getting. A similar situation occurs with the iron supplementation in Total... it's also a poorly absorbable form.
The reason behind this is that this way they can CLAIM to have a certain amount of nutrients in there, because technically they do... however, the format they put in there is the least expensive form.
ANYWAY, you still DO get SOME nutrition from Total, of course, but I wouldn't count on getting quite as much as they say. I'd buy it based on whether or not you like the taste :) I am not a fan of it, personally... I think it tastes weird :) But my father adores it!! lmao
So it's just a matter of preference when you come right down to it. :)
Enjoy!!!

Hey there,
I found Total to be OK for me, a real good way for me to get my B vitamins which I find make me feel better in the long run. I either buy all natural cereal at my health food store or Total. I too drizzle honey on the natural cereal wink total is sweet enough to me.
I agree about the vitamin thing. Finding absorbable vitamins is best done through a varied diet, from foods which naturally contain that vitamin rather than foods that are enriched. However, I think total is a good supplement to my diet.....and since I cant take a multivitamin, Total+diet works for me!
The only thing I have noticed is that I cannot eat total right before bed. I am just fine during the day, but if I eat it in bed, I think the vitamins that my body does not need are excreted (by urine) and if they sit in my bladder all night I burnnnnn like crazy in the AM  learned that one the hard way. But Im fine during the day......In fact....I think Im going to go have a bowl right now!!
wink
Big hugs

I always read the contents to see how much vitamin C is in the cereal. For example, if it says "100% of daily requirement for vitamin C," then I know to stay away from it. The cereal I eat has no more than 10% vitamin C daily requirement, and I seem to be ok as long as I stick to that. Can't remember, but seems to me that Total was too high in vitamin C for me to even try . . . and I can't add any fruit topping, such as blueberries or strawberries. Bananas are ok though.
