Today I had to put my 7 year old shepard mix Scott to sleep. He got sick very suddenly and we were not prepared to have to make that horrible decision. I love him so much, and am going to miss him terribly. He was a wonderful dog who loved people and other animals alike. I am in shock as it happened so fast. Not a very Merry Christmas for me right now...:(

Losing a loved pet is losing a family member. My heart goes out to you.

I agree with Donna - that was a family member you lost, and I am so sorry for that. I know what it's like to have to make that horrible decision and I pray you nor I ever have to make it again. I am so sorry for your loss, I know how much you'll miss him.

I've had to make that decision quickly before too. And I'm so sorry you are in that position. It was several years ago and I don't really cry about it too much anymore but reading your post brought it all back. It just hurts so bad that you can't really explain to them what's going on. I'm sorry. I know how you feel and I hope you never have to feel that way again.

Oh, how I can empathize with you.....we had to put down our precious lab of 12 years and I'd never been through that experience....the most heart wrenching decision and experience.

I'm so sorry for your loss....truly pets are family and we hurt and miss them so much.

So sorry. We have lost many animals, and it is always so very heartbreaking. I look at our two golden retrievers and can't imagine how devasted we will be when that day comes. How sad so close to the holidays.

Take care.

Thank you everyone for your condolences. Scott was like our child. He watched over us and our house, and was always under foot. There is a very empty feeling in the house without him there. His nose prints are still on the window from where he watched out from the second story spare room. It is going to take some time to get over this one for sure :(

The same thing happened with our black lab a while back. We had to put him down, too. I truly adore Bubbles, my current dog. (a mutt) By the way, you can cry over a pet as well.

I'm so sorry! It's never easy to lose a furry family member, and especially hard when you are the one who has to make that final decision. Very, very hard, - and sad!

Hugs,
Vicki

I'm so sorry. Sending lots of hugs your way! I know just how you feel. We had to put my rot down a few yrs back and it just broke my heart. I still miss him. He was our gentle giant.

Many hugs and blessings

We have been through this too recently and it is so hard. We got a new little pup about a month ago. He will never replace the one we lost but we are starting a new adventure and it is fun.

Thank you everyone for your support!!! We love our furry pets, but they aren't here long enough sometimes :( I lost my father this year too, and this is my first Christmas without him as well. When it rains it pours...sigh...

Our Maltese bled to death right in front of us. We couldn't do anything to stop the bleeding (a brain abnormality.)
We raced him down to the University of Illinois wrapped in a bloody towel and, as it was the weekend. and they weren't really equipped for an animal as desperately ill as he was, bottom line he bled to death and as hard as the staff worked (and even got him a "live" blood donar) nothing could help.
My husband, a Buddhist, said the Buddhist Prayers for the dead for 40 days that he would, successfully, pass over and re-incarnate and this gave us peace.

I am overwhelmed by your love and support, and thank you all so much. It is helping me immensely. We were in the midst of painting our house before the holidays (that is no longer on schedule needless to say), and he started to show signs of sickness. He wasn't eating, and very lethargic. I thought maybe it was the painting, but it was low VOC's, and we had windows open, and the other animals (cats, and my dog Lincoln) were all fine. I took him to my regular vet, and they could find no signs of sickness which I am terribly upset about because he was very sick. On Saturday he actually ate some food, and seemed to be on the mend, but then Sunday he went really low again. I took him to The Banfield Hospital down the road, and they did digital x rays, and blood work, and we found out he had a splenic (spleen) tumor that ruptured, and he bled internally into his belly, and it had already metastasied to his lungs, and liver. The explanation is here: http://www.ehow.com/facts_5492535_splenic-tumors-dogs.html. He could have bled to death, but it clotted. We could have brought him home, but it would have bled again eventually, and he wasn't eating. The doctor didn't give us many options, and he is a Perdue University Professor Veterinarian. The radiologist came back with the exact same diagnosis as the vet gave us. I really didn't see any signs of illness that I recognized beforehand. I keep thinking that I missed something :(

I'm so sorry for your loss... we put down our rescue smooth collie, Angel, back in May. First time I've ever put a dog to sleep. It was awful, but she was ready to go. Any longer and she would have just been suffering.

My dogs are my kids. They don't live long enough for sure. It's much too hard to let them go. :(

I am very sorry. Most people here have had the same terrible experience. Mine was putting down my Chihuahua which I had for 19 years. We grew old together. Little dogs live longer then large dogs. I guess he just died of old age. He looked me in the eyes and was telling me "It's time" We owe it to our pets to do the right thing when the time comes. Sadly it is the Holidays which makes it very hard on you. Not to mention the first year with out your Father. My opinion only: wait before you get another pet. They never can replace the Dear one we lost and it is kind of unfair to the new one. I waited five years and we now have two little ones. Fun and loved but still can not replace my Joey. I try to be grateful for the time we had together. He taught me much and was a blessing. A warm loving hug to you. Ziggy

So sorry for your loss. I can't imagine when my Westie who is now 6 years old won't be here. I dread that day. My uncle and aunt have owned dogs for years. The other night I had a crying episode. I called out Becky, Monty, Emily and Posie. They were all my uncle's or aunt's dogs that passed away. I greatly miss Becky. My uncle got her when I was 10 years old. She died when I was 23 years old. I miss her dearly.
