Well I am home from 1st treatment. I took hubby with me and it freaked my uro out. They put me in the room and uro came in. He said are you having second thought:confused: Hubby just looking at him . My inner self was screaming heck yes I dont want to do this (lol) I am a BIG chicken... My mouth however says no I'm just nervous. He says ok well be right back. Ok now im really terrified. They can in and it took like 3 minutes. They did use lidocaine:)but it burned like heck :yikes: he says hold it no matter how difficult for 1 hour. My hubby drives me home and I am bawling cause it burns... I run into the house and it had only been 15 minutes and I went straight to the bathroom. Hubby was not happy he said I should have held it longer. I told him you have no idea so PLEASE dont tell me that. I did my best. It wasnot as bad as I thought but it burns like heck...... (ouch)) already took my prydium, pain pill, and the cypro they gave me plus have my heating pad on. Kelly

Did they mix the lidocaine with the DMSO or instill the lidocaine first? If they mixed it, that doesn't do any good for me --- for me at least, the lidocaine needs to go in first, then wait a minute and instill the DMSO.

I hope you feel better soon.

Sending gentle hugs,
Donna

Yep... I am not a fan of the DMSO treatments either... however, they seem to help after the first day or two after each instill, so, I keep doing it.

I hope you feel better soon!!

I was told that you shouldn't hold it in for an hour. The most you should hold it for is about 15 min to 20. Not that you should listen to me without consulting a docor but I would ask. I cut and pasted this in from a question and answer session with a doctor being interviewed by the icngirl. I hope it is inforative. But like I said you should still ask your uro. I hope it goes better for you at your next app. Take care. - Chris

<icnmgrjill>We often hear about patients who have tried DMSO and who experienced pain while holding the solution in their bladder. Based on your experience, how often should a patient hold the DMSO and what recommendations do you have for reducing that pain?

<drjacob>Currently, and over the last several years, we're using a combination of RIMSO-50 and MSM (DMSO2) which we instill directly into the bladder. But also, we believe that IC is a systemic disorder and almost every patient I've seen and I've seen probably as many as anyone. Almost every patient has a musculoskeletal problem, a gi problem, and/or has depression. One of the difficulties is that when the urologists treat IC, the urologist's focus on the urinary bladder, which is understandable. But, we don't feel that that's the right way to treat it. We use DMSO by IV, orally, topically (on the urethra) as well as intravesically into the bladder and we have had no problems with burning. Our patients are instructed to hold the solution in their bladder for as long as is comfortable, usually no more than 15 to 20 minutes. I think that we're getting 90% of our IC patients to improve. We see IC patients from all over the world because we are using multiple routes of administration.

I read that before I started my treatments. My uro said he suggests 1 hour. Well I did 't even come close. It still burns today. I am taking my meds and using my heating pad. I had a big headache and stomach ache all day yesterday. It is getting better today. Hopefully next treatment will be better.
