A friend sent me the link to this article regarding the use of Stem Cells to regenerate bladder cells. It's actually pretty facinating....and I wonder if this would/could apply to IC'ers. I'm going to print it and take it to my IC Specialist the next appt. I have and see what he thinks. Until then, if anyone has any more info on this subject, please pass it my way!!

I'm with Donna, this would be wonderful if it could restore all our bladders! Thanks for posting.

Wake Forrest University is trying to grow bladders as well. Not sure of any details but my Dr told me that they are attempting it there. The more the merrier!! I would happily take a new bladder! I hope they have breakthrough soon. I am so tired of meds and side effects.

Thanks for sharing this.

That IS fascinating! And great news! A lot of people we know who do not understand what Bob is going through cannot understand why he can't get a bladder transplant...We can only hope that if and when this does come about ICers will be candidates. Hang in there everyone!

I have always thought Stem cell research would someday help people with IC but did not know it is getting closer then I thought possible. Those who are against Stem Cell research has never had a loved one suffer and horrible painful chronic disease. I am a senior but I Pray this happens soon for our young people. It's so sad to read a student's and young Mothers horror stories. Thank you for this information. Hugs, Ziggy

I think that this is a great start! However, Im not sure if regenerating bladder cells would be a permanent solution. I think there are other factors in our bodies enviroment (maybe toxins, genetics, immune disorders ect) that contribute to the weakening/destruction to the the bladder lining. (just my opinion) If these issues arent fixed,(and thats if they can be fixed) then I can only see relief may only be short term or would have to be maintained. For instance taking supplements like elmiron, cystoprotek, glucosamine ect coat the bladder lining and provide relief for alot of patients. they are good but require maintanence because when patients stop taking these the symptoms will come back eventually. THe thing that sucks about IC the most is that the etiology is highly debated which I think makes it hard to find a cure. I do believe a cure would be found one day.
