Hello,

I am scheduled for a laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (removal of tubes and ovaries) on Monday morning. I had to have an emergency D&C about a week ago because I was bleeding so heavily. My hemoglobin had dropped down to 9 and then 8 and I had to have two blood transfusions. I had spotting all throughout the month before that daily and am still having spotting. The doctor did an endometrial biopsy and it came back with atypical cells twice. They do not think it is cancer, but they cannot pinpoint what it is. They are doing more tests on it. My uterus is also very abnormally shaped and full of fibroids and my doctor feels it is going to happen again and the D&C was just a temporary fix to stop the heavy bleeding. My daughter gets married January 8, so we decided to do it now so I have time to heal before the wedding. I am hearing now that women are having more IC pain after the hysterectomy. and I am scared to death. Has anyone had their bladder stay the same or get better? I am also debating on the bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. My left ovary has a big cyst on it, so am thinking I should have that one removed for sure. I don't know if I should keep or get rid of the other and go on hormone replacement. I will be 49 in January and my doctor says I will be in menopause probably soon anyway and the ovary will stop producing hormones then. He said we can always go on hormone replacement. My dad had a heart attck in his mid 50s, so am afraid I would be at higher risk if they are both removed. I am also scheduled for a vulvoplasty for my vestibulities. Any input is greatly appreciated.

I had my hysterectomy before I developed IC, so I can't help you there. I just wanted to tell you I hope the surgery goes well and you recover quickly.

Sending warm well wishes,
Donna

Hi,
I also had my hysterectomy and oopherectomy many years before I developed IC. I was in my late forties and bleeding all the time too, with lots of fibroids and polyps in my uterus. I opted to have my ovaries taken out, but that is a very personal decision, I think.
I hope all goes well for you.
Good luck.

bubbe1 did you go on hormone replacement? I know they think IC is related to hormones somehow. Just wondering if I should go on hormone replacement or not. Don't know how it would affect my IC.

Hi, Holly ~ I'm sorry you're having such a hard time. I also went through the profuse bleeding but fortunately did get it under control with meds. Did end up with hysterectomy and bladder suspension a few years after and in my heart I do believe I began my IC symptoms immediately during my recovery so I don't have the answers for you. I am now on Premarin Cream and so far no side effects.

Best wishes with your surgery. I'm sure you'll make the right choices. Keep us posted how you're doing.....Prayers,

I had a hyster. in 2000, I wish that I can tell you that it helped me, but it put me out of remission for quite some time. Since then, of course, I have been in and out many times.

Hi Holly,
I'm sure you're not reading messages today but I thought I would write anyway and say I hope all went well.
I noticed that you asked me about HRT, which I answered, but since I didn't see the post, I'll answer again.
Yes, I went on HRT right after my surgery and have been on it ever since. For me, it was the right choice. It helps to talk to your doctor and also to know your family's health history before deciding about hormone replacement.
Looking forward to hearing from you when you feel better.

bubbe1. I am doing well. I am on Premarin now. Is that what you are on? They also did a vulvoplasty on me and found out I also have lichen sclerosus. I have noticed the last few days I am having horrible vulvar burning. I have not had that happen in a long time. I don't know if it is from the vulvodynia or lichen or if it is related to hormones or what. Debating going off the Premarin and seeing what happens. The only thing is I was having horrible night sweats without it.

Dear Holly -

Just an FYI. A lot of ICers cannot use Premarin. You might want to try bio-identical estradiol.

Hope this information is helpful to you.
