View Full Version : Do not ever do this!
Put uncooked rice down your garbage disposal. It doesn't like it.
Yes, that's just what you want to NOT do the day before Thanksgiving -
create your own plumbing drama in the kitchen...
And if you do this, remember to try the plunger BEFORE you put generic DRANO into the standing water.
You get unpleasant burns on your hands when the water & Drano erupt at you.
You feel even worse when the plumber gets burned by it.
Better yet, don't even use chemical de-cloggers for acute problems.
Or, just go out of town & stay out of your own kitchen.
Sigh. Thank God I'm not responsible for the Thanksgiving meal.
I'm bringing the netflix dvd.
Hope you all have warm and relaxing Thanksgivings:)

Oh Kadi, that is awful! I clogged my garbage disposal one time with celery. I didn't even want to admit I made a mistake because I felt so stupid! lol

LOL! What a frustrating experience. At least it makes a really great story. I've clogged the garbage disposal several times too. (I would not have guessed uncooked rice would be a problem.)

Sorry to hear that! One thanksgiving, my sink clogged with potato peels. My fil had to take the disposal apart. I think he may have been the one who clogged it to begin with.
Have a good day tomorrow!

YIKES! How awful. I do have a "remedy" I use for clogged drains --- I pour soda in the drain first (about a cup), then pour clorox on top. It smells awful, but will clear most problems.
By the way, I don't have a garbage disposal unit, but when I did my favorite thing to get stuck in there was spoons!

My remedy is similar to Donna's.
I use baking soda and vinegar followed with boiling water.
For an exact recipe search "drain cleaner home remedy".

Vinegar is the choice if you have a septic tank. :)

Oh my!
I had no idea that rice and garbage disposals don't mix. I'm always putting uncooked rice into mine. I will NOT be doing that again!
I'm glad you're okay.
love the ideas for clearing the drain btw. I hate using toxic chemicals.
Happy T-day everyone!

Well, that didn't sound like it was any fun! I heard that the day after Thanksgiving is the busiest day of the year for plumbers.
Yes, the handyman had to saw off the u-shaped pipe under the kitchen sink - the rice created what looked like cement in the pipe. He put a new pipe under my sink & then took the bad one to the apartment manager's office so everyone could see it.
The substitute apartment manager then called & yelled at me for:
1) putting rice into the garbage disposal,
2) calling the after-hours pager at night (since they didn't answer, I don't see why she had to yell about it)
3) calling my own plumber when they didn't answer the pager for 14 hours & I figured they'd all left town for the holiday. (Which I immediately canceled, so again - no harm, no foul?).
When she got done yelling at me and I'd apologized about 7 times, I asked her if she could please put in her message to the real apartment manager that she'd already done a really good job scolding me, that it wasn't a very nice life experience, and that I'm very repentant & will never do it again?
My parents did make a lovely Thanksgiving dinner, they liked the dvd I brought, and a good time was had by all. And I now have a new appreciation of my own kitchen sink.
Thanks for the sympathy on this. I think I will call it "Learning Experience #463".

Oh my goodness gracious! Lol! What a cranky apartment manager.
I can't believe rice = cement!

So sorry that happened to you. Just to give a heads up....don't put cooked spaghetti down the disposal either...I have done it twice and clogged it both times! Thankfully my MIL told me not to put potato peels down the disposal. Not growing up having one, I never knew what could and couldn't be put in the thing.

Ok- so that is another item not to put in the disposal! I knew about potato peelings, grease, and a few other items. We do have a septic system so thanks for the tip about declogging.
The only casualty that I had was a burned hand (between thumb and first finger!) did this when I was trying to put the marshmellows on the sweet potatos (didn't pull the rack out far enough).
Hope everyone enjoyed their meals and movies.

Potato peelings? Who knew!
If I don't have at least one burn, I didn't cook anything worth while!
Good Thanksgiving for me and my husbandm(just us this year), and the dog, who very thoughfuly volunteered to help us not have too many leftovers! Now dog has stomach ache!
