View Full Version : neurontin
Has anyone had any luck with pain reduction with neurontin. The Oxybutol patch has helped with frequency but not pain.
Thanks

Hi Indy,
I can tell you I tried neurontin and it helped my pain but made me very ill so unfortunately I could not take it. I have read other post and some people do good with it. Best wishes and hope you can find something that helps with your pain.

I take Neurontin. 1800mg. a day, if I go any higher I get very ill. It has worked at keeping flares away, but it hasn't helped my pain tremendously.

I just started taking Elavil. Is Neurontin similar or is one better than the other?

For those of you who have been helped by Neurontin, at what dose do you feel has made a difference for you? Jess, you said 1800mg. That seems like so much to me. Are you well adjusted to the side effects? My doctor at a pain center told me that Neurontin will not work for pain unless you take at least 800mg a day. I have tried it for several months and just don't like what it does to my mind and memory.

I started with pain dr. about 4 mos. ago and he started me at 300mg. 3x day on nuerton. Then the following week when I saw my nuerologist for another condition he said that would really cut back on migraines and other pain. Boy was he right! Then, pain dr. increased 400mg. 4x day. I was a zombie and slept all day, really out of it. So he lowered to 300mg. 4x day. I love it and wish I'd been prescribed earlier, much earlier. My migraines are down to once a month versus 3-4 days a weeek. To me it's a miracle. To anyone not on it, you may want to suggest to dr. and start low and build up. It's been a wonderful for me.
Please excuse my spelling, it's late and I can't figure out how to set up spell check!
Best to all, sweet dreams,
Julie:kiss: :toosh:

Neurontin has helped me. I take 600mg 2 x a day,but my docs say if I need to increase it,they will work with me. It isn't really a pain reliever I don't think, but it sure does help some for me~

I take neurontin 400mg 4 times daily. I built up to that dose slowly and have no bad side effects. I have found it to be extremely helpful for both by bladder pain and my migraines. I used to take a lower dose - 400mg 2 times daily. This dose did not have much effect on my bladder pain. The 1600mg daily that I am currently on has been very helpful along with my other meds.

I've been taking neurontin since Thursday (5/13). I'm taking 100mg 3 x a day. I think it's helping me a lot with my bladder spasms. I've felt a lot better the last couple of days, but I still have pain - it's just less pain. I am hoping these side effects wear off after a while because I am spaced out.

Karma,
They will, it just takes a lot of time, that's why it's important to build up slowly. At first my pain dr. put me on 400mg. 4x day. WOW, talk about out of it! I had to call him. Anyway, this med. does make me sleepy, but it's worth it. I used to get migraines 1-2x wk., now maybe 1x a month, isn't that great? Plus it just helps w/ overall pain and I'm thrilled to be on it.
Hang in there, pls. let me know what happenns,
  ;)

Hi Lyn,
1800mg is a fantastic dose for me. It helps me so much with my Fibromyalgia. I am able to sleep at night, and I no longer have to nap during the day. This is really the dose that helps me the most, and I have no side effects. At first it made me drowsy, but that went away. I am free to take it and go on as the day progresses without having to nap! :) As for IC...eh. I know it helps others, but for me, it hasn't been helping much lately. How are you doing? Long time no talk to!
Hugs and love,
Jess

Jess,
My IC pain has given me a real problem these last several weeks, but yesterday and today I feel great. I can't explain why, but it is such a relief. I'll take a good day whenever I can get it! I was on Neurontin for over a year for back/nerve pain. It helped somewhat, but just couldn't handle the side effects. And it didn't help with my bladder, as I thought it might. So.... I've been down the long road of trying other meds.
Hope you are doing well,
Lyn

I took Neurontin for about 9 months for muscle pain from when my interstim failed and tightened up a muscle in my abdomen. It helped also with the muscle spasms and IC flares because my implant wasn't working right and had to be turned off. I took 900 mg a day. It took about 3 weeks for me to get used to it and a month to wean off of it. Don't stop it cold turkey. It has nasty side effects stopping abruptly like stroke.
