Hi
I went to the doctor on tuesday for a check up to see how the elavil was doing for my ic. She didn't think it was helping very much because by looking at my daily log of my bathroom trips i go about 60 times or more a day. She put me on elmiron and detrol
la 4mg. I have heard some things about the elmiron and i am kind of afraid to take it. My hair is just starting to grow back from where i had poly cystic ovarian syndrome. My doctor told me that 90% of her patients that were on the elmiron didn't have any side effects. So i am trying to decide on wether or not to take the elmiron or not. I could really use some advice .
Thanks for your time

The only way to know if it is going to bother you is to try it. Everyone is different. Elmiron is suppose to help about 40 % of the people who use it. Very few people have a problem with hair loss and those that do, it is my understanding the hair will come back when they go off the Elmiron. Good Luck.:)

I'm on Elmiron & Detrol. They both help me. I lost some hair (not noticeable) when I started Elmiron, but then it came back.

I've been taking both Elmiron and Detrol LA (and Elavil, by the way) for the past year and I'm in remission. I feel like "normal" most of the time, which is really nice, considering that I also have vulvodynia and OAB.
The only side effect I noticed from Elmiron is that I bruise more easily, but I didn't lose any hair or experience some of the other possible side effects.

I have been on Elmiron for a year and one-half with no side effects. I was also on Detrol for 3 months but it didn't help my bladder. It dried out my mouth so I discontinued it. I would suggest trying the Elmiron as only less than 1% of patients on it have any liver side effects. My doctor does a liver function (blood) test once a year and I was fine last year.

I've been on Elmiron for 4 years now it, I've had no side affects, and my URO wants to ween me off it but I hope he does not try as its been working fine for me. I even can tell in the mornings if I'm late taking my 1st pill. He also has me taken Flomax and that also seem to help me, but it may be diffrent for me sense I'm a guy. Hope everything works out for you

Hi Ladybug.
I live in Shelbyville, KY and work in Lexington. I am looking for a good doctor in the area. Are you in this area? Do you mind telling me who your Dr is? You can send me a private message if you prefer. I've tried posting a thread on this, but haven't had much luck.
Thank you very much.

Hi! I have been taking Elmiron for my IC for 8 months now and it seems to be working good. I didn't get any side effects at all, so I am glad about that. I take Detrol LA too and it really helps with the bathroom trips. I don't have to go as nearly as I had to before! I am wondering though, if anyone else's teeth have gotten bad from either drug. I went to the dentist the other day and he told me I have gingivitis, 3 cavities, and my gums are receding!!:yikes: I was so upset!! I have always taken good care of my teeth and haven't had any problems. He asked me what types of medications I took and I told him. He thinks that because I get "cotton" mouth from them, that that may be what is causing my problems. I did do a search on Elmiron too and one of the side effects listed was dental cavities!:yikes: I tell ya, I don't know what to do. Keep taking these meds and hope my teeth don't get worse, or go off them and have my IC get worse. I just know that I will NOT take Elavil again! That stuff is awful!! All I wanted to do was sleep and cry!! (and it's supposed to be an anti depressent?) I often wonder what the long term affects will be from Elmiron and the Detrol LA.
Wishing you a good day, Rita_Lorraine :butterfly

I, too, suffer from dry mouth and my dentist was concerned about decay. He gave me Rx toothpaste to use that is designed for patients with dry mouth caused by meds. I have used it for a couple of months now. I was feeling good before I started using it then went downhill. Upon checking the ingredients, I discovered it is full of a long list of bladder burners. Obviously, I wasn't eating the stuff but I had to have been ingesting a small amount every day and it really did bother my bladder. Decided to go back to my regular toothpaste and brush thoroughly and frequently to try and keep my teeth healthy. Seeing the dentist next week and will discuss this with him again to see if there is anything else I can do. I certainly don't want to give up Elmiron and Detrol LA which help me so much!

Hmmm, I'm glad I'm not the only one with this dental problem. I did find a mouth rinse from a health food store called PerioWash. It is all natural and made by "Nature's Answer." I hope it helps!
Wishing everyone a painfree day, Rita
