View Full Version : How to cope with constant urge to urinate
I am hoping someone can help me out...I have not yet been confirmed with IC but sure seems like it. At the beginning I had major pain but was able to make it better eating IC friendly foods as my Cysto wasn't for 3 weeks and I was going crazy. I had the Cysto done along with some DMSO and feel way better. I don't know if it was the DMSO that helped or what. Then all of a sudden I had this constant urge to urinate. I went to the Dr and found out I had a UTI and was given cipro for 3 days. It did not help. The Dr said it should have. She told me to take Vesicare but that didn't help the urge either. So I when back again because the urge seem to be getting worse and another Dr said I had a UTI and gave me 7 days of cipro...I am on day 3 now and still have the urge. I find this hard to cope with and try and hold out for as long as I can. I also started getting urethra burning & pain the the opening and it always feels irritated especially after I urinate. My Uro said to get some Pryridium and that might help. I am just worried the cipro won't work again. I think the hardest thing out of all of this is the constant urge!

Yeah, that's rough! I only experience the frequency/ urgency thing when I flare, but when it happens I'm not going anywhere or doing anything. I'm basically chained to the toilet.
I wonder if your original infection never resolved itself? Did they do a culture to find out what bacteria was the culprit? I'm not up on meds but I think Cipro is kind of an 'all around cowboy' in the antibiotic dept, but I don't really know that for sure. I do think I've heard it takes about three days for an antibiotic to take effect so maybe it'll kick in soon for you.
I'm a big believer in the Pyridium, as it really knocks the edge off the symptoms for me. Also, baking soda in water can be helpful if you're not on a sodium restricted diet.
Hope this passes quickly for you!

Thanks for the info Vicki...I have/need a prescription to buy here in Vancouver, B.C. I was just wondering, can you get your pyridium over the counter or need a prescription too? It is about $40 for 30 pills here.

I'm not a doctor but do yourself a favor and don't try to squeeze the last drops out. Don't strain at all. Try to relax as much as possible.
