This past week the Canadian Jays arrived. I look forward to their return even though it means winter isn't far behind. When I'm outside they can't help but come to see what I'm doing, often sitting within arms reach while they supervise.

They also go to great lengths to mess with my dog's heads, -which doesn't take much. :lmao:

God must surely have a sense of humor having created those birds!

How fun! I thought I was going to come here to moan with you about the winter coming, but I got a smile instead! :-)

I could do a bit of moaning though! I am so not ready for winter!

I mean, I am,...I have my winter wood in, garden prepared, cold weather clothes out (and summer clothes packed away -boo hoo!). But I am so not psychologically ready for the cold dreary days ahead!

And here I am whining when I'm guessing my Idaho winter is probably milder than your Michigan one! Maybe a bit longer, but milder!

I'm not looking forward to winter, but the trees are gorgeous around here! I just wish autumn could be followed by summer. :) In Oregon the Canada geese are back --- they winter here so I get to see them fly over in the mornings when I go after our paper.

I talk to them when there's a huge flock --- mostly telling them "don't poop!" while I'm watching them. :)

Ok- its barely Fall out here, we still are having temps in the high 80's as well as the low 90s. Mornings for the most part is around 60; the last 2 weekends I had my A/c off for most of the day and had the windows opened! It was so nice.

Oh, that must be nice, Mary! Right now it's 28 here and everything is glowing white with a thick layer of frost. Kind of pretty, but,....Brrr!

I know I can complain like the rest of the world, especially when we have 100 degrees for xx amount of days during July and August! ( or even when we do get down right cold). This morning it was 45 degrees and about 60 in the house, I really wanted the heat on while I was getting ready to go to work, but thought no, everyone has extra blankets (and why should they be nice and warm while i wasn't (did have on my thick terry-cloth robe and slippers!!)

I know I am definately NOT ready for winter. We had a doozy here in Northern Va. last year, more snow than Michigan,(according to our daughter who lives in Yipsi).
I bought a new snow shovel the other day in the hopes that having done that, we will have no snow at all! However, if the Wooly Bear caterpiller I saw the other day is any sign,(and I have never known them to be wrong), we are going to get slammed again. This was the wooliest wooly I have ever seen!
Our Canadian geese have not arrived yet, but I am looking forward to having them back even though they are a harbinger of winter . They're beautiful, and I love the woosh of their wings as they fly overhead.
Now I must go out and buy warm clothes. For some odd reason, everything from last year shrank in the closet over the summer.:smile tee
Enjoy the fall!
Laurie

Hmm, Canadian geese are here year round. I wonder if our summer Canadian geese head south and are replaced by other birds that come down out of Canada for the winter?

I think it's all relative, Mary. Around here we start complaining that it's too darn hot once it passes 85. Once it gets into the 90's the news folks are on TV warning us it's dangerous to be outside. :lmao: Texans would be holed up for months on end if you heeded their advice!

You easterners really took a hit last year with the winter! I have a friend who spends the winter on the MA coast (to escape our N. Idaho winter) and we chuckled over her choice last year. Our winter here was fairly mild while it seemed every time we watched the national weather the upper east coast was taking a beating!

For some odd reason, everything from last year shrank in the closet over the summer.
I know! It must be the humidity or something! Glad I'm not the only one who noticed this phenomenon!

I'm in Texas with Mary and the weather now is FANTASTIC! 80s in the daytime with cool nights - it's just perfect. I don't miss winter at all! And I'm so thankful we don't have to spend weeks raking leaves and trying to get the yard cleaned up before the snow falls. Put up with all that for too many years. We've been in TX almost a year and a half now and we're still lovin' it - so thankful we could make the move! Guess I've fully acclimated to TX now as I don't find the summer heat to be that bad (humidity here in the Hill Country is usually low so that helps). I guess I'm a full-fledged Texan now, y'all :)

We don't have migrating geese, but the migrating Monarch butterflies are a beautiful sight to see. We have 2 Loquat trees that are "fixin" to bloom and they attract the butterflies like crazy. The Monarchs stop and rest in these trees while on their way south to Mexico. Loquat trees were new to me and have strange habits. They bloom in late Oct - Nov and the fruit ripens in April - May.

Hope those of you up north enjoy the beauty of fall and that the coming winter will be short and mild for you!

Oh, and that clothes shrinking phenomenon --- that happened to me here, too. I think heat must be the cause....

Annie,
The hill country MUST be a little cooler. Our son lives in Galveston and says you could just melt in the summer!
Love your saying re doctors with dead plants!
