Went for my post-op appointment today and got my operative notes. One of the things I noticed that hasn't been written before (and I've had 4 cysto/hydro's done) was that I have significant trabeculations. Can anyone shed light on that? I only saw the nurse practitioner who suggested I start the hydro's every 6 months instead of waiting a full year because I do get relief from them. I have an appt. with my uro/gyno in December but wanted to see if anyone else has had this?

The term "trabeculation" refers to a thickening of the muscle in the bladder wall. When viewed through a cystoscope, these thickened areas can look like a series of lumps and dents in the bladder wall. This happens often in patients who have trouble urinating, as well as in patients who have had chronic bladder inflammation (like with IC) for a long time - it is a biological response to stress on the bladder.

I have trabeculations as well... in fact, I have one that is so big on the upper left side of my bladder that it can be seen on an X-ray! When viewed from the inside using a cystoscope, there is a bunch of old scar tissue at that site as well, because that's where I tend to get Hunner's ulcers from my IC for some reason.

Thanks for the reply. I wonder if it something that will continue to get worse. UGH!! I'm pretty miserable right now with my IC.
